Cash alone does not make a pregnancy safe. In my piece for @ETGovernment, I argue that maternity cash transfers deliver their full value only when paired with care and counselling. That is the real arithmetic of pregnancy.

1/4 NFHS-6 confirms what sustained effort in Odisha has built. Child stunting has fallen from about 45% two decades ago to 26.8%, now better than the national 29.3%. For a state at our income level, that is a creditable achievement.
2/4 The gains rest on strong foundations laid by the Government of Odisha: institutional delivery above 90%, four or more antenatal visits up from 51.2% to 65.2%, and rotavirus vaccine coverage up from 36.4% to 85.4%.
3/4 Odisha is now moving from how much we deliver to what children eat. Mukhyamantri Sampoorna Pushti Yojana commits ₹3,354 crore across all 338 ICDS projects, adding eggs, bananas, chana and til ladoo. Pada Pushti Yojana, unique to Odisha, carries hot meals to remote tribal hamlets.
4/4 Suposhit Odisha Mission is certifying all 74,224 Anganwadi Centres, verified by 6,000 NSS volunteers. Heckman's evidence puts the return on such early childhood investment at 13% a year. Odisha is building exactly that.

#WATCH | Bhubaneswar, Odisha | Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, Odisha Government, Mrinalini Darswal says, "Today, the Juvenile Justice Committee of the High Court of Odisha and the Department of Women and Child Development have jointly organised a full-day consultation to mark the completion of ten years of the Juvenile Justice Act. Experts from across India are participating to discuss the work done and achievements made under this Act regarding 'Children in Conflict with Law' (formerly known as juvenile delinquents) and 'Children in Need of Care and Protection'. We will deliberate on how to proceed in the future to ensure that no child requiring government care and protection is left behind. The points emerging from these discussions will guide our future actions..." (06.09)
At the Outlook MSME Growth Conclave, Odisha 2026, I argued that the next task is not larger transfers but greater capability.
Under Subhadra, 1.04 crore women across all 30 districts have received over ₹20,600 crore, credited to accounts held in their own names.
The evidence is telling us something. Women setting money aside for a business rose from 25.5% after the second instalment to 53% after the fourth. Financial independence rose from 63.9% to 78%. Average bank balances rose by ₹6,887. Demand for skill training rose from 12.5% to 64%.
Financial security did not make her want less. It made her want more.

Swine flu has nothing to do with pigs.
Not from pigs. Not from pork. It is the same seasonal flu that returns every monsoon.
And it is not the virus that kills. It is the days lost before the right tablet reaches the patient.
Every district counts cases. Almost none count hours.
That is the number I would ask for.

#WATCH | Delhi: Dr Mohit Gupta, Professor of Cardiology, GB Pant Hospital says, "In our own study on 1,600 patients with heart attacks who had received the COVID vaccine and those who had not received it. We found that those who have received the COVID vaccine not only have lower chances of having a heart attack, all-cause mortality and sudden deaths, but also, following them for 30 days and 6 months, the chances of death of those people are significantly reduced. The COVID-19 vaccine is harmless and also plays a protective role. This study is not only ours; ICMR has also validated this... In our study, we took both the COVID vaccines and similar results were shown for both the Covaxin and Covishield..."

When I was in business school, the idea of India overtaking Japan in GDP felt like a distant, almost audacious dream. Today, that milestone is no longer theoretical — we’ve become the world’s fourth largest economy.
It’s no small achievement. Japan has long been an economic colossus, with legendary productivity and resilience. That we’ve caught up is a testament to the ambition and ingenuity of millions of Indians — across sectors, generations, and geographies.
But as we celebrate, we must stay dissatisfied.
Because India’s next leap must be in per capita GDP, not just overtaking Germany…
For us to keep Rising, India needs sustained economic reforms — in governance, infrastructure, manufacturing, education, and capital access.
