The Government of Canada is assessing the latest tariff measures from the United States. As has been the case for the last 18 months, our first priority remains on protecting and supporting Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses from these unjustified actions. Our core focus is on what we can control: building strength at home, diversifying our partnerships abroad, and building Canada strong for all Canadians. I am in contact with Ambassador Greer. When the US is ready to engage, our government will work in good faith and constructively towards a more secure mutually beneficial trading relationship that fully respects Canadian sovereignty.

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”. The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms. Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

We’re investing in our communities.    That means community centres where your kids can play safely on the weekend.   It means more hospitals, so you don’t have to drive two hours when your child is sick.   And it means new transit that reduces traffic and cuts your commute home.   Because building Canada strong starts with building stronger communities.

Today, Toronto announced it is reducing development charges thanks to funding from the provincial and federal governments. I thought I'd do a by-the-numbers post to provide some added context. 17% Toronto’s share of the $8.8 billion province-wide fund for development charge reductions. 40% The reduction for studio and 1-bedroom homes. 60% The reduction for 2+ bedroom homes. 2018 The approximate year Toronto’s development charges are being reduced back to. $661 million The amount of road works capital projects that will be funded. $327 million The amount of water and wastewater infrastructure that will be funded. $511 million The amount of transit capacity that will be funded. 25,150 The baseline number of homes expected to be built over the next three years without development charge reductions. That works out to an average of 8,383 homes per year, which is shockingly below the average of roughly 19,600 homes per year from 2016 to 2025. 18,750 The number of additional homes City staff expect the development charge reductions to unlock over the next three years. That is 6,250 additional homes per year, or a 75% increase compared to the baseline average. $0 The number of dollars developers will receive from today’s funding announcement. That last number matters. Every dollar cities receive to reduce development charges goes to cities, not developers. The funding will be used to pay for infrastructure that everyone in Toronto benefits from, including roads, water, wastewater, and transit. This is an important reminder that reducing development charges is not about writing cheques to developers. It is about lowering the cost of building homes while still funding the infrastructure needed to support growth.

Every Canadian deserves a home they can afford. Today, we moved closer to making that a reality for families in Ottawa. Through Build Canada Homes, we’re helping build 8 new affordable housing projects - exceeding our target for affordable homes in Ottawa by nearly 10%. Of these, the majority will be beginning construction before the end of the year. This is how you build more affordable homes at speed and scale across the country.
