There's been some recent theorizing (from @JohnDanaher) about different types of deceptions robots can engage in -- and Andres work seeks to provide the first experimental evidence for different perceptions of robots on the basis of those types of deception! 3/

As a member of @phillips_beth's ALPHAS Lab, Andres is interested in how robots can give justifications (rather than mere explanations) for their actions. And in this work, Andres explores how people view robots' use of deception in the course of those justifications. 2/

We especially recommend Bengisu's HRI 2024 paper "Toward Family-Robot Interactions: A Family-Centered Framework in HRI" dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3…, but you can learn all about Bengisu's body of work at bengisucagiltay.com/ Thank you again Bengisu for talking with us today! /end

Bengisu also shared insights on how different family members prefer robots to take different roles, and key challenges in family-robot interaction, including identifying, recruiting, and building rapport with families, and accounting for diverse family structures. 3/

Bengisu's work is focused on family-robot interaction: a domain that is inherently long-term, in-the-wild, and multi-party. Bengisu talked about different ways that robots can facilitate family routines and interactions in this domain. 2/

A big contribution of this work beyond the experimental results, stimuli, and use of implicit methods was the creation of a lab setup for testing mind perception in person while maintaining high experimental control, all of which was extremely cool to see. 4/

Tuğçe began by describing how she created a dataset of standardized Human-Robot Interaction stimuli. Stimulus creation and norming is incredibly important work that doesn't get enough attention in HRI! 2/
