MISSD works to reduce harm and save lives by raising awareness of akathisia, a med-induced disorder that can precipitate self-harm, violence, and suicide.

The American Legion's "Be the One" initiative emphasizes reaching veterans before a crisis through community outreach, education, and access to resources. MISSD supports prevention efforts. Yet we also believe prescribers need to be on the frontlines of prevention by being the ones to clearly communicate the risks of medication-induced suicidality and iatrogenic death prior to prescribing. legion.org/information-cente…

UK regulator MHRA announces stronger antidepressant warnings on suicidal thoughts and behaviors and sexual dysfunction that may persist after stopping. These risks are not new. Clearer warnings have long been needed. We're glad they're finally here. Will other countries start better informing patients of the real risks? gov.uk/drug-safety-update/an…

This @PsychTimes article looks at medications used to reduce suicide risk. But one missing question deserves attention: Do prescribers and patients know that medication may be causing the crisis? Even after the drug is discontinued? Medication-induced self-harm, violence, and suicide is real. It's delusional to think iatrogenic harm should be excluded from articles such as these. psychiatrictimes.com/view/ev…

These true stories are universal-- only the names, places and, sometimes, the drugs responsible, change.
m.youtube.com/shorts/18cSiNu… "The story often is: they went on a drug for work stress, because their mother died, because things were wrong in their life, but they were not suicidal. But when they came off the drugs, things got so bad they took their own lives."

The VA is expanding informed-consent requirements for psychiatric medications. The @FDADrugs black box warning on all antidepressant identifies increased suicidality risk through age 24. But akathisia does not discriminate based on age. Medication risks deserve informed consent, especially when those risks can end lives. nytimes.com/2026/09/28/scien…

More than 1 in 5 older adults had a medication regimen flagged for a potentially major drug interaction, a new study found. Drugs marketed as antidepressants were often involved. Know what you’re taking, and ask about side effect and interactions, including when drug dose or type changes. medpagetoday.com/geriatrics/…

Deaths caused by medical care, including drugs, devices, procedures, and mistakes, are likely greater than the 3rd leading cause of death given that many of these deaths are not accurately recorded.
Joe Rogan and Andrew Huberman look up how many Americans die from medical error each year, and the answer floors them both. ROGAN: “Okay, so medical error is responsible for 251,000 deaths a year.” HUBERMAN: “Whoa, that’s crazy.” ROGAN: “Do you understand how insane that is? Imagine if that was Pop-Tarts.” That number comes from a 2016 Johns Hopkins study published in the BMJ. It estimated medical errors kill 251,454 Americans a year, which makes them the third leading cause of death, behind only heart disease and cancer. And it gets worse. A 2023 Johns Hopkins and Harvard study found that misdiagnosis alone kills an estimated 371,000 Americans a year and leaves another 424,000 permanently disabled. If an airline killed that many people, nobody would ever board a plane again.

"Censorship is the worst enemy science has. And it is everywhere in medical publishing." When systems increase risk and perpetuate harm, systems should change. People deserve better.

I often wonder how different the SSRI antidepressant story might have been if the @FDA had acted differently in 1991. At the time of the 1991 FDA hearing on the emergence of suicide and violence with antidepressants, Prozac had the HIGHEST number of adverse-event reports submitted to the FDA’s National Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting System, according to Alan Gelberg, then Acting Chief of the Surveillance and Data Processing Branch at CDER. Then listen to the conflict-of-interest waivers read at the beginning of the hearing for committee members with financial ties involving antidepressant manufacturers. 😳 The advisory committee ultimately voted unanimously, 10-0, that the evidence did not support a conclusion that antidepressants caused the emergence or intensification of suicidality or violent behavior. I still wonder if they listened to the families who came forward and told their stories during the open public hearing. WHAT IF the FDA did their job and had required warnings in 1991? WHAT IF doctors and patients had been alerted to these potential serious harms from the beginning? Would antidepressants have been prescribed so freely over the next 35 years? We’ll never know. But here we are today, 35 years later, living with the consequences of an overmedicalized culture and decades of widespread antidepressant prescribing. Watch the conflict-of-interest waivers and the final vote from the 1991 FDA hearing. 👇
