To all the graduating med students: Your humanity is not something to overcome to be a good doctor, but part of what makes you one. It's what allows you to notice the person behind the diagnosis, sit with uncertainty, grieve what can't be fixed, & still return with compassion.

A student still remembers you because you were kind when they were struggling and unsure of themselves, when no one else noticed. A coworker still remembers you because you checked in with them and took time to listen after a very difficult event.

A patient somewhere still remembers you because you were kind and present in a difficult, vulnerable moment when no one else was. A patient's family member still remembers you because you sat with them and took time to listen and answer their questions when no one else did.

Four million physician hours are spent on mandatory modules each year. They represent not just clinical time lost but “evenings reclaimed and cognitive load reduced.” Redundant training and low-value modules should be a thing of the past. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

My patients tell me, "If I had only known I would get sick... if I could go back to the last holiday, I would've worried less, I would've been more present with the people I love.” Cherish your people today. Time is not guaranteed.

(1/x) Intubating a critically ill patients is the most dangerous procedure we do in the ICU (3.1% cardiac arrest rate) not because of hypoxia or tube placement, but hemodynamic collapse 🫀 (Russotto et al. JAMA 2021) A 🧵on making high risk hemodynamic intubations as safe as possible.

(5/5) #5: In EMS, you spend you entire 12 hour shift in the ambulance with your partner. With the right person, this develops close partnership and friendship. Sometimes in a large hospital this can be more difficult to achieve, but developing comradery, trust, and even friendship with your colleagues helps contribute to exceptional care, and also a work environment you look forward to everyday. Thanks to all at @CritCareWestern

A sad state of affairs. My dad, still working in his 70s as a GP and doesn't want to abandon his patients has spent >18 months trying to recruit young grads to take over his practice. No one is interested. This is in part the reason. The numbers simply just dont make sense.
In Ontario a GP visit pays them $38. And this covers 1 simple visit, or a half hour to go over 10 problems and a bunch of forms to fill. Hasn't changed much in 20 years. Why would anyone want this job? youtube.com/watch?v=mGjmESD2…

“In Ontario, more than 2.2 million people are currently without a family doctor. Another 1.7 million are looked after by a doctor who is 65 or older. The Ontario College of Family Physicians predicts more than four million Ontarians will be without a family doctor by 2026…”

Pediatric Anesthesia Pro Tip #92: Don't get stuck in your ways. While developing your artform is key to expert practice, try new things once in a while. Today I tried cisatricurium for the first time 😃. This concept allows our trainees to teach us and expands our repertoire.

Sault Ste. Marie is experiencing a devastating crisis. Without action, nearly 30% of the population could be without a family doc in the next year. It’s not an isolated situation. This is an example of what's happening across Ontario. Read more: bit.ly/3tXE2pz #SaultNews

An interesting report of severe bronchospasm presenting as an absent waveform capnography trace after multiple re-intubations. However, there is no clear description of timings and whether exhaled CO2 ultimately was detected? @doctimcook @NicholasChrimes journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…
