The L1A1 Rifle! After the EM-2 was politely shown the door - brilliant idea, wrong cartridge, and the Americans were not in the mood to be told how guns should work - the British Army needed a proper self-loading rifle that spat the standard NATO round. So they tested everything that didn’t fall over, looked at the Belgian FN, which half the planet was already using, tinkered with it until it felt sufficiently British, and called the result the L1A1. Ours is semi-automatic only. No bursts. None of that spray-and-pray nonsense. And we didn’t bother with the heavy-barrelled version other countries use as a section machine gun, because apparently one job at a time is quite enough. The early ones had wood. Later ones got glass fibre, which is lighter, doesn’t mind the rain, and looks slightly less like something your grandfather kept over the fireplace. The principle never changed. Gas-operated. Solid. Reliable. Thirty or forty properly aimed shots a minute if you can be bothered to aim, which, on a rifle this long, is rather the point. And length is the problem. When we adopted it we still had an empire’s worth of commitments and needed a rifle that could do everything from jungle to desert to standing about looking serious in Germany. Now the job is mostly North-West Europe, climbing in and out of armoured vehicles, and the occasional street fight, and a rifle the size of a drainpipe is about as handy as a ladder in a phone box. Sooner or later it was always going to be replaced by something shorter that could also do automatic fire when things got unpleasantly close. This rifle could have a night sight on it. You can fit all sorts, a simple foresight with its own little light source, or a Trilux job, which clips on, powers itself, and can be turned up or down depending on how invisible the enemy is trying to be. A long, honest, slightly awkward rifle. Does the job. Takes up rather a lot of the vehicle while it’s doing it.
