Don’t wait for ward councillors to tell you what you need. Set the agenda with a manifesto that identifies your community’s needs. Create a Community Manifesto using the guide and template developed by ACT Ubumbano and @MVC_SA.

Local governance leaders' decisions can mean a safe, healthy, dignified life for you and your family. You deserve that.
Set the bar high. Keep an eye on everything your ward councillors do, make sure they are serving you. When they know they are being watched, they (usually) feel the heat and are more likely to act right. 💪🏾
🇿🇦 Show up for yourself, your family, your neighbours, your country. 🗳️

Democracy isn’t a one-day event; it's an everyday practice. The crises we are facing as a nation: our democracy under threat, our hopelessness, our lack of participation, the violence, the hunger, the literal sewage in our streets… these issues were made over decades, and it’s going to take decades of unmaking to fix them. No one can sit that out, it’s going to take all of us.
But it is not impossible. 💪🏾
We, @Mobilize_ZA, @ForDemocracySa, @MVC_SA and @capture_beyond will be sharing 10 ways you can start making civic engagement part of your lifestyle before and after 4 November.
🇿🇦 South Africa needs you. Let’s get started. 🇿🇦

Feeling powerless? We get it. But, organising where you live (at the hyper-local level) has incredible power. Democracy, begins at home!
You can rally your street for a coordinated call-in campaign to fix your pothole, then build that energy into a neighbourhood-wide conference on billing issues, then connect into city-wide crisis action committees as an organised body. 💪🏾

🗳️ Election season has a familiar script:
Politicians arrive.
Promises are made.
Votes are cast.
Posters come down.
Councillors disappear. 👀
What if communities rewrote the script?
A Community Manifesto puts residents in the author’s seat. Communities collectively decide their ward’s priorities, the standards they expect from their councillor and how that councillor must report back throughout the term.
Candidates are then invited to respond to the community’s agenda and make a written, public commitment to it.
No more treating communities as an audience for political promises. Communities set the mandate. Candidates answer to it.
@ActUbumbano and My Vote Counts, together with partners, have developed a Community Manifesto template and plain-language guide that communities can adapt and use.
The politicians have held the pen for long enough.

What makes a political manifesto meaningful to the people it seeks to represent?
In this episode of On The Pulse, Keamogetswe Seipati from My Vote Counts (@MVC_SA) explores the importance of involving communities in the process of developing political manifestos, and what a genuinely bottom-up approach could look like.
If manifestos published during political campaigns are meant to respond to the issues people face, perhaps the people should have a say in shaping them.
