Her fiancé was killed less than three weeks before her Olympic debut. Glory Alozie 🇳🇬🇪🇸 was a Nigerian-Spanish sprint hurdler who entered the Sydney Olympics as one of the gold medal favourites. The previous year at the World Championships in Seville, she clocked 12.44 seconds to earn the silver medal. Tragedy struck just before the Olympics. Her fiancé, Hyginus Anugo, was training with the Nigerian relay team in Adelaide before being scheduled to return home on 4 September after he wasn’t picked during final selections. However, he remained in Australia to support Alozie. On 7 September, Anugo was killed by an oncoming car while crossing the road. Alozie received the devastating news in Yokohama, where she was competing at her last meet before the Olympics. Heartbroken by the news, Alozie lost weight and missed over a week’s worth of vital training, saying “I came really close to not competing.” 🎤 She battled through the grief and lined up for the first round of the 100m hurdles on 25 September. From there, she navigated the remaining rounds before winning a courageous silver medal in the final. Following the conclusion of the games, she immediately flew back to Nigeria alongside Anugo’s casket, as she was adamant about flying home together. A heartbreaking situation, yet Glory Alozie displayed incredible resilience under the most difficult of circumstances. ❤️ 📸 Stu Forster
