Stockport council is performing worse than any other council in the north west for the percentage of homes delivered against its government-set targets. In other words, it’s not building anywhere near as many homes as are needed to tackle its growing housing needs.
In 2020 Stockport's Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors voted to go it alone when it comes to planning for housing, leaving the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework.
It was labelled 'Stexit'.
Now 250 homes are set to be built on Hall Moss fields behind Andy Kitching's home in Bramhall - the exact type of green belt land those politicians voted to save.
A local plan is out to public consultation - it proposes building 8000 homes on such pieces of land in Stockport.
Was Stexit a terrible idea?

An ITV investigation exposed racism in Reform — did it also expose hypocrisy in Labour?
The documentary showed Reform figures across the UK espousing racist and sexist views, including Tameside councillor Raymond Dunning. He's resigned and is now an Independent...
But the lack of outright condemnation from Tameside Reform for Cllr Dunning's comments has shocked some, while others have accused Tameside Labour of pointing figures with unclean hands, pointing to the party's own chequered history...

One of the things I’ve always found weird is how reticent the architects of the very successful Manchester project are to engage in public debate.
Today one of the big brains of (real) Manchesterism takes aim at its critics. Including The Mill..

Some people love the CIS Tower and consider it an icon of modernist architecture. Others didn't always agree. (1/3)
When the building was put to a vote for English Heritage listed status in 1995 Manchester Evening News reporter Janet Reeder called it an "eyesore".
It gained listed status later that year anyway. (2/3)
Now, it sits empty, and nobody can figure out how to bring it back to life.

Over the past 20 years, Sheffield man Rob Beal has worked as a senior civil servant, become an expert in airline safety, and hob-nobbed with football bigwigs from Qatar.
But none of that is true. He is actually Sheffield’s most successful media hoaxster.

The crowd starts to boo, so Nicky picks up the microphone, points his sword at the DJ, and tells him that if he plays the wrong track one more time, he’s going to cut off his hands.

I've covered a lot of noise complaints and licensing hearings. This is by far the weirdest.
My report for @_TheLondoner is a saga of a dead dog, council conspiracies, racist emails, public defecation and a venue that wasn’t the community space it seemed.

‘Migrant HMOs’ in Salford are under attack. But is everything as it seems?
We spoke to a woman whose home has been targeted. She's black and says she doesn't live in an HMO at all - she and her four kids were asleep when their windows shattered. Her new car was damaged too.
A neighbour, Dwayne, says: “They’re not all HMOs... mostly there are just ethnic people living here.” Yet for others, they feel concerns around HMOs for asylum seekers are ignored. "I don’t want anyone who I know nothing about – young men all of them – moving in", a local says.
The attacks have divided Salford, prompting public outrage, as well as praise, across social media. The message, scrawled in black paint over doors and walls - "NO HMOs" - appears unambiguous, but the facts behind it are considerably less so.

The Mill can reveal that a University of Manchester academic co-authored a research paper linked to Chinese espionage.
Last month, a "shock wave" rippled through British universities, according to the Guardian. It began when MI5 issued a rare alert to the UK university sector...
A uni spokesperson told us they "require researchers to undertake appropriate due diligence on collaborations" and they have identified no relationship between the university and CGTRI...
However, the alert raises questions about how much responsibility universities should shoulder to protect their researchers from becoming involved in projects tainted by foreign interference.
