ALT A portrait of the protagonist. Randy is the second born and first to doubt the wisdom of the rites and ceremonies of Cream. She spends her days lost in thought, seeking refuge in her headphones, watching the world outside the parlor windows. And Randy is beginning to sense that there are far deeper mysteries–and even more devastating truths–waiting for her in the air beyond.

ALT Brother Pegalus, last of the litter, ever first to scent impending drama – is the unofficial peacemaker of the Saxon Cats. By the grace of his ultra-sensitive endowments, he can pinpoint the faintest disturbances in his environment, like the distant wing whistle of a pigeon or the days-old scent of pilfered cream on Randy’s breath. But sensory overload is always a danger, making conflict avoidance less a noble calling than a matter of biological necessity.

ALT Transhumanism is a philosophical and intellectual movement which advocates the enhancement of the human condition by developing and making widely available sophisticated technologies that can greatly enhance longevity and cognition. It also predicts the inevitability of such technologies in the future.

ALT other to multitudes, Dr. Cassandra Pearl’s contributions to the field of genetics have been nothing short of revolutionary. But at the peak of her career, a deepening depression has brought all her projects to a standstill, save for one. Her hobby, as she often dismisses it. Her cats. The fruit of decades of careful breeding and genome manipulation, they have been perfectly engineered for a new role in the food chain. With one flaw: a delicious dependence on “Mother’s Milk.” And only Dr. Pearl knows the formula. Seeing the research through its final stages will demand all her focus and energy. The cream must flow.

ALT Firstborn and first to drink of Mother’s Milk, The Nazarene has devoted his life to the woman who raised him. Each word that crosses her lips becomes part of the Mothertruth, the shifting doctrine by which the Saxon Cats measure their days. Behind a mask of stoicism, he is forever straining to contort the mundane into allegory, often at the expense of other truths that might deliver the cats from their growing thirst.

ALT Circling shadows from the Air Beyond. Old as the seven hills. Round and round our flocking foes have kept watch over the house of Mango. Fierce Saxon Priest, our surname-sake whose battle tumble cracked countless warrior skulls. Storm Crow and Parlor Roller, with beaks like darting spears. Stout Dragoon champ and Mane Quail, captains of the pavement phalanx. Manchengo, the rind-wattled. Wise Jacobin, hooded deceiver. The Mookee, Whistle Wing and Saddle Muff Tumbler. Cursed legions arrayed in thy reeking iridescent armor - may thy talons chip and shatter, thy eggs go cold in the night.

ALT To be Mango is to contain multitudes. Our line descends from ancient feline stock, sweetened with the cream of new world breeds. Proud Manx and Toyger gift us our strength and stealth. From Old Maine Coon and ever-hungry Creamer, fathomless wisdom and thirst. Of Sphynx and Ragamuffin, Moogie and LaPerm, our choice looks and stately poise. As well the Bengel, Havana Brown, Calico, and Kitty Superm. The Peterbald, Laptackle, and Lay Baby — each breed imparting diverse genius, each star-crossed pairing yielding its exalted fruit.

ALT ...and settling Randy upon her lap, Mother laughed. "That's a good question..." Her gaze drifted through the old picture window: smog and rain, a chaos of rooftops. "Air Beyond, while it certainly looks like fun, full of smells and flutter and prey– there is also loudness and many great terrible birds and so much wetness..." "Like a Bath?" Guantanamo asked, eyes large. "Yes," said Mother, "the Outside is full of Bath... sometimes, without warning, Bath even falls from the sky!" The children all shivered, The Nazarene most of all.
