Such a fun group to be a part of! #teamdenticle
Our collaborative #NSF shark denticle team is growing! The 'Accessible Shark' summer #REU program is in full swing and we managed to get the whole group together at Harvard and WHOI for our annual meet-up! So many denticles, so much progress! 🦈 #teamdenticle #shark #skinteeth
We started off 2024 strong, expecting it to be a great year. But daycare had other plans for us...3 days in and the entire family has covid. Has to stay home for another week...Maybe this means we will catch a break for the rest of the season? One can hope #MomsinAcademia
Catch some of our denticle work this week at #SICB2024. I unfortunately am not in attendance, but there is a lot of cool denticle science happening, so check it out!
The shark #denticle #multiverse will be on display at #sicb2024 this week. See talks in the @SICB_DCB_DVM sessions. So much diversity, so little time ... below the #ontogeny of sleeper shark denticles from Vaz et al. 2023: mdpi.com/1424-2818/15/11/110…
A little late, but I had such a great time speaking with students at Weber State University last week about denticles!
Had an awesome seminar via zoom this morning by Dr. @MarBioMoll on her research on shark skin! Then students dissected a dogfish shark and were enamored w it’s denticles, naturally. Cutting them from all parts of the body to look for differences!
My SICB+ talk is uploaded! Check it out if you want to learn about the amazing ontogenetic changes in denticle morphology in leopard sharks! @georgelauder @tteavery2 @SICB_DCB_DVM @SICB_
The best people are denticle people 🤗
Shark Denticle Dinner @SICB_ After a day of amazing #shark #denticle #multiverse talks we had the first in-person gathering of our @NSF shark team! #SICB2023 @SICB_DCB_DVM @SICB_DEDB 🦈
Come see some denticle talks tomorrow Jan 4th, in Lonestar G including mine on leopard shark denticles at 8:45 am #SICB2023 @SICB_DCB_DVM

Something they don’t tell you about academia is that you’ll be 30 years old and still wearing a backpack everywhere you go.

A great short read by @marinacoladas on our most recent study comparing shark denticles to engineered surfaces. Thanks!
@georgelauder @MCZHarvard #sharkskin
Shark skin is the envy of material engineers trying to design super hydrodynamic swimsuits. But a new study revealing the 3D structure of shark scales shows these materials are a long way off. 🦈⚖🔬

Woo hoo! We're excited to bring you this workshop right before Halloween!
Hey @SICB_! Did you know @dcsalcedo & @MarySalcedo are running another Agile in Academia workshop?
After feedback we decided to revamp our workshop to get right down to skills. Join us on Oct 28th for 2 hours and come away feeling empowered!
Register: bit.ly/3yiSUxG

ALT A poster with fish swimming across it. Title includes: "Finding your flow: What's the locus of your focus?" Other text: " How do you encourage your team, when things are piling up, but production is slowing? In this 2 hour workshop we’ll go over 4 topics: Defining Your Value Stream, What’s Your Backlog?, Kanban and Managing Tasks, and Standup Meetings and Review Cycles. You'll come away with how to establish your own personal work flow, but also how to strategize working or managing groups."

We are launching a new #canine #science study! We want to understand how early life experience influences adult behavior. This is a really important question for #dog wellbeing. Phase 1 is just a brief survey! Later we will add genetic and MRI components. Please share! 🐕🧠

In case you missed it yesterday, check out the discussion on biomimicry and bioinspiration from @NatGeo and @EVNautilus. Featuring scientists (like me!) who study sharks, marine mammals and indigenous populations.

Join @UNCWilmington biologists, Dr. Michael Tift (@uncwtiftlab) and Dr. Tiffany Keenan, tomorrow (9/14) at 6 p.m., @HiWireBrewing as they discuss careers that focus on studying marine mammals.
FREE EVENT Presented by @capefearmuseum.
What a whirlwind of a trip! Thanks @Frable for helping me collect samples and for putting up with my requests...especially those that entailed running around at the end of the day! Can't wait to process the samples and learn more about Triakis!

(I learn so much whenever I work with you two!)
And thanks too to @exc_moa for the support and for hooking us up with Patricia Ribault 👍🏽
Hi! @MasonDeanLab, Ronald Seidel and I recently published the chapter "To build a fish. Structuring space and material in skeletons" at the book "Design, Gestaltung, Formatività" 🦈. Hope you enjoy it! (cool stuff + beautiful figures + OA!). Download: doi.org/10.1515/978303562244…
