I already like Ultraman: Rising and I haven't even seen it. Here's why. The Asian male character is actually attractive. There's so few ATTRACTIVE Asian males in American made entertainment and EVEN LESS that have actually had an on-screen kiss.
When I was growing up, there was Bruce Lee and that's it. BTW, he never had an on-screen kiss. The first time I saw an attractive Asian-American male actor kiss someone was in 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' and Jason Scott Lee wasn't really given many more roles like this since.
Even in "Romeo must Die" Jet Li never kisses Aaliyah... and Jet Li played the "Romeo" role. Think about it and try to name just 5 Asian American male actors where they play an ATTRACTIVE role and that have had an on-screen kiss... people we've actually heard of besides the 2 mentioned in this thread.
There are plenty of attractive Asian males out there. We see it in foreign music like K-Pop and Asian movies all the time so why not in American entertainment? Shangchi... no kiss. Give my TO boy Simu Liu some make out scenes already!
This is also why I really appreciated "The Walking Dead"... even though it took a zombie apocalypse to give my dude Steven Yeun some action, it was something I never seen before and I really appreciated it. But I wish there was more representation like this.
We have plenty of 'smart roles', 'teacher roles', 'gangster roles', 'goofy roles' but almost never 'attractive heart throb roles'. Just a handful of examples over 100 years of film... even though there's millions of Asian Americans.
Why is this important? Because it not only shapes our culture but it also gives confidence to the Asian Americans out there that we can also be attractive and sought after. Representation isn't just putting a minority on screen... it's also the character they play.
I wonder what entertainment would look like if the representation of attractive people was equal to the population of those groups of people? How many more attractive Black people would be on screen? How many attractive South Asians would be on screen? Hispanics... etc. Just something to think about.
Anyhow, make sure you watch 'Ultraman: Rising' and kudos to my boy @ShannonTindle_1 for not just making an incredible film but repping an Asian male character as someone actually attractive and cool looking.
