BIRDS OF A FEATHER? I denounce the Trump administration’s reported decision to provide roughly $35 million in military aid linked to Cameroun’s acceptance of third-country deportees. The BIR has faced serious war-crimes allegations. Washington cut assistance in 2019 over human-rights concerns. What principle justifies reversing course because Biya’s government agrees to receive deportees? First came congratulations on Biya’s inauguration after a disputed election. Now comes this arrangement. To me, this shows a disturbing absence of moral principle. Human beings are not bargaining chips. Human rights must not become negotiable whenever a government offers Washington something it wants. I hope Democrats win control of Congress and use their oversight and funding powers to challenge this policy. Three Cameroun soldiers were reportedly beaten in Konye, while a Mezam gendarmerie chief was reportedly arrested over a kidnapping ring in Bamenda.
