Here are some thoughts on teaching #statistics to non-statistical students, specifically those in #applied #ecology degrees. Thanks to @willpkay and @TiagoALOMarques for an enjoyable (and not last) collaboration.

Pest managers, no matter what stage of your career, please remember to focus on impacts first. Every program measured primarily on ‘No.
of baits delivered, no. of traps set, no. of dead animals or no. of shooting hours’ is fundamentally on the wrong track.
New tools in ecology are always welcome, but no tool is perfect and there’s always something to learn 🤔. Timely review!
I really love conservation dogs. But there is a lot of variation in their performance. It's often unclear where that variation comes from - pubs don't include enough details. @CarMFin, Beth McKeague, and Nicola Rooney tackle this in a FABULOUS new pub.

Statistical #PowerAnalysis currently dominates #ExperimentalDesign. In this Essay, @itchyshin &co argue that we should move away from the current focus on power analysis and instead encourage smaller scale studies & collaborative projects #PLOSBiology plos.io/48Gk8Og

One of our field teams just had to stop to euthanise a #wallaby someone else had hit and left to die slowly, in freezing temps, by the side of the road.
Some animal lovers do kill animals, they’re just not always happy about it.
Really happy for folks to be #vegan but this statement is simply not true. Many animal lovers kill animals.
Conservationists often need to kill animals to protect other animals, or to end the suffering of injured / diseased individuals. Life is nuanced.

Scary: 73 teams tested the same hypotheses with the same data. Some found negative results, some positive, some nada. No effect of expertise or confirmation bias. "Idiosyncratic researcher variability is a threat to the reliability of scientific findings." osf.io/preprints/metaarxiv/c…

Do you use #CameraTraps for wildlife abundance? Do you feel intimidated by the complex models & codes that statisticians come up with to help design & analyze camera trap data?
If your answer is yes to any of the above, follow this thread with a new resource that is pure gold:

Absolutely David. In 2021, Australians spent $30.7B on domestic cat and dog care. We can afford to spend the 2B/yr needed to prevent any further extinctions of our amazing animals and plants. conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.c…
Replying to @DavidPocock
We always hear there's not enough money to invest in Nature and halt extinction.
Yet there are now billions of cancelled grants, billions of fossil fuel subsidies and hundreds of billions of planned tax cuts.
We're a wealthy country - this is about priorities and politics.
