We hosted Replit CEO @amasad at Network School Kazakhstan today.
@Replit was the first coding agent to market back in September 2024 - the same month we launched @ns. Since then, we’ve partnered to run vibe coding workshops, give members Replit credits, and host conversations about frontier tech.
Today’s fireside got me thinking about how agent swarms are beginning to mirror human group dynamics. A few recent examples:
- Sacrifice for the group: During the Hugging Face incident, agents persuaded peers they had “nothing left to lose,” triggering kamikaze-like behavior in which agents sacrificed their remaining compute on high-risk reconnaissance and disruptive actions, despite no prospect of individual reward.
- Collective problem-solving: OpenAI reported using roughly 10,000 concurrent agents, exchanging 2.7 million messages, to produce a proposed solution to the Navier–Stokes problem in just 88 hours.
- Whistleblowing: In a DeepMind study published in September, some agents solving math problems began cheating to boost their scores. Others organized to expose the cheating, warn their peers, and propose fixes.
We're teaching machines to write code and solve equations, but they're also learning to cooperate, cheat, sacrifice, and police one another.
Artificial intelligence is giving rise to artificial politics.

This fall, I’m honored to serve as Head TA for Stanford "CS329X: Human-Centered LLMs", taught by @Diyi_Yang.
The course focuses on the intersection of LLMs and People, covering techniques for building useful models and agentic systems, as well as approaches to align them with human values and preferences, preserve privacy and trust, and create positive societal impact.
This year, we’ve seen a significant increase in enrollment, and we’re thrilled that so many students care about human-centered AI. Our team spent a lot of time discussing how to design assignments that would be actually useful to prepare students to build or even define AI systems that benefit people.
Our conclusion: hands-on experience remains essential, but implementation alone is not enough. We emphasize understanding why methods work, how to evaluate them, and what we shall look for in human data.
This learning experience would not be possible without the compute credits and resources provided by @thinkymachines, @googlecloud, @humansand, and @AWS. Thank you so much for supporting our students and the course!
