At small scales gravity shouldn't matter - these protein drops, however, start off spherical but change shape as they evaporate depending on the direction of (weak) gravity. Find out more at: go.aps.org/3IEpwXF

Band-aids are flat, but knees are curved; this geometric incompatibility means blisters often form, but when depends on how bendable the band-aid is, as shown in this new study pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22…

Thanks very much Scott - it was great to be invited.

Our paper on why coffee rings are dark + thick in sharply concave regions, but light + thin in convex regions, is out now @JFluidMech (with @MathsMoore ) - see the pic. The big surprise is that this is true even for constant evaporation rate…

Scientists have long tried to create objects that can transform their shape, so-called morphing structures. But this is problematic. Just think about wrapping an orange with a piece of tissue paper: extra area has to be wasted in folds. Our way around: maths.ox.ac.uk/node/40772

Beautiful work (literally) from PT Brun and colleagues!
Fresh off the press: nature.com/articles/s41586-0… Soft robots are "life-like" robots 🦑🤖. Our "bubble-based" method is an easy way to fabricate and program them, e.g. to fetch a ball (w/@Trev_J_Jones , @EJambonP and @biosoftact). @Nature

No problem. It would be interesting to compare with data from Scotland if you can get it: their schools go back for the first time since Dec 2020 today. Even so, their all-age data shows a rise in cases during March, see ig.ft.com/coronavirus-chart/…
Also, just FYI, school holidays are not uniform across the country. Some authorities closed schools on 26/03 I think but ours was 31/03.

Yes, and year 12 to age 24 is ages 17-24, so the vast majority are out of school. I guess the timing of the peak here is less to do with term end (earlier than 20th Dec in most unis) and more to do with mixing in the run up to Xmas and Xmas itself (followed by rule changes).
