good thread here on not becoming beholden to a "score." disclaimer: i've been a whoop user for 3+ years + would advocate for responsible use of health tracking wearables.
Reco wearables have become increasingly popular: but Penn State put WHOOPs on 23 D1 swimmers for the hardest 6 weeks of their season, then checked the scores against lab work and a stress questionnaire. Recovery score had no link to any of it. Here's what I'd take from it 🧵

we're in a tricky spot about all this because the current generation of big leaguers didn't grow up watching baseball. and the current generation of youth / amateur players don't watch baseball. so, there's a whole lot falling on dad coaches to teach a kid how to be a ballplayer.
At some point, baseball has to get back to valuing ballplayers and not just numbers on a screen. Give me the Freddie Freemans, the Buster Poseys, Hunter Pences, Pablo Sandovals, Michael Youngs, Ian Kinslers of the world. Guys who just flat out know how to play the game. Everyone wants to talk launch angle and exit velo, but what happened to valuing a quality at bat?” The 9-pitch battle that might end in an out, but forces a pitcher to show everything he’s got. The guy who hits behind the runner, takes what’s given, or just refuses to give a pitcher an easy inning. Those at-bats might not look sexy in the box score, but they show up in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Some of these dudes could absolutely leave the yard too. That’s the point. They weren’t one-dimensional. Somewhere along the way, we confused measurable tools with knowing how to win baseball games. I’m not against analytics or hitting the ball hard, but there is an art to winning that you can’t fully measure. We need more guys who know how to play baseball, not just hitters, not just athletes, ballplayers. And I promise you, those dudes never go out of style

red sox-yankees tonight. payton tolle vs. cam schlittler. 88% fb usage vs. 90% fb usage. both lead with three fastball shapes. two of the best young pitchers in the game. should be a good one.

Bo Davidson just became the first Giant since 1931 to have a hit, stolen base and run scored in their big league debut. 3 years ago Davidson was playing in community college. He didn’t have any offers out of high school, played for 2 community colleges and took a year off in between due to a family matter, he went undrafted before being discovered by a Giants scout and signed to a minor league contract. Never give up on your dreams kids. #sfgiants @NBCSGiants

What upsets me about youth sports is we are continually moving away from what is best for kids and we have moved towards what is best for adults. We’re in the middle of a 40 billion dollar industry, with showcases for young kids and now reality television shows. Nowhere in any of this is a discussion of what is best for kids. We have lost the whole point of youth sports.
