I recently made a dataset of community organizations focusing on data centers. Check it out here:

“I had 50 people I talked to,” Gustafson told me. “Nobody wanted that datacenter in their community. And at least a half a dozen people came up to me to say, ‘Hey, I voted for Trump. What the heck’s he doing, supporting these things?’” theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i…
"“Unfortunately what we’ve seen time and time again in this administration especially is the EPA putting the pursuit of AI and increased computing capacity over its obligation to protect public health and the environment,” Kalmuss-Katz said"
The Trump administration has approved two new datacenter chemicals to which exposure can result in “sudden death” and a range of other serious health risks, like cancer, eye corrosion, neurological damage and reproductive harm — according to a new lawsuit.

"artificial intelligence and natural gas industries of trying to turn Buckeye Lake into their “exhaust pipe.”"
A new data center wants to build a 40-turbine natural gas-fired power plant near Buckeye Lake.
“It’s tech infrastructure dumping noise, heat and air pollution onto our families,” Hoover said.
“It’s our right to breathe clean air.”

It would be interesting to see the donations by AI super PACs vs negative mentions of AI and Data Centers
Replying to @ccemorse
Democratic candidates are generally more likely to discuss AI than Republicans, especially on AI harms, data centers, and regulation.
The only topic Republicans dominated was AI & national security.

Ohio is #2 in the nation for the number of opposition groups behind Pennsylvania
The latest Data Center Opposition Report is out for August, finding 580 local opposition groups across nearly every U.S. state, totaling over 640,000 members. Check out the full report here: datacenteropposition.com/wp-… @MorePerfectUS
"“It doesn’t even take a finished building,” Solomon said. “Once a proposal shows up in a county’s public record, sentiment turns negative and the odds of maximum hostility nearly triple.”"
Big Tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft and Google are running TV ads touting the so-called benefits of data centers, but people aren’t falling for their PR scheme – and the movement to stop data centers is only getting stronger! insideclimatenews.org/news/1…

SCOOP: Documents show that power companies and tech firms invested in the data center buildout have created a group to ‘educate’ and support friendly state regulators with big donations and secret retreats. Get the inside story from @evanhalper washingtonpost.com/business/…
"Using reports from oil and gas companies about demonstrated gains from AI tools, the Alpines modeled AI as a productivity enhancer across various sectors of the fossil fuel industry, from extraction to refining to electricity generation."
NEW: some scary new research out today showing that the fossil fuel industry's use of AI could possibly increase global energy emissions by as much as 4.8%
that number is much larger than global data center emissions projections

"“I think people see that the ruling class is united behind this plan to push data centers in our communities,” Lawrence said. “That’s a place that you can fight from.”"
Can opposing data centers help progressives win?

I compiled all the NDAs signed by Louisiana officials with private companies. You can search through them here.

"we know that four states are losing at least $1 billion annually to data center tax subsidies, while another six are losing at least $100 million annually, and dozens more have losses totaling millions of dollars every year."
The governors of Nebraska and New York this week moved to end data center subsidies -- and they're not alone.

Good morning, Asia. While you were sleeping, one of our most-read stories was about Google burning through cash for the first time since going public decades ago as it raised its spending forecast for AI infrastructure. ft.trib.al/aew0dAG
