I think these 2 datasets demonstrate the logic of "going early" in 2027 pretty conclusively. LAB would likely LOSE a significant number of seats, but would lose far fewer than waiting until 2029, after 2.5 more years of fiscal/inflationary pressure, potential Tory revival & difficult compromises. Good will is always spent over time, even with the best of intentions. The options are: A) govern for another 5 yrs, enact progressive constitutional reform (PR+HoL abolition/Senate of Regions+English Mayoral Devo) + build a National Care Service with a small majority or in coalition with LDs after a 2027 election, AFTER WHICH a future of European-style, cobbled together LAB-LIB-GRN-CELTIC NATIONALIST centre-Left coalitions would be the future of Left politics under PR, OR... B) Lose to a revived Tory Party in 2029 & watch the Reform hard right potentially prop them up and reverse the Employment Rights act, Renters Rights Act, sell off bits of GB Energy/NWF, start putting rail services back out to private tender, leave the ECHR etc. I SUSPECT Burnham's pro-Europe stuff is a way of herding much of the centre-Left bloc back under the LAB banner without "abolishing neoliberalism". And it will (I HOPE) largely remain on the level of signalling/vibes rather than 2nd ref/rejoin promises (which would fracture the country and the old Labour coalition in unpredictable ways). Not making a value judgement on any of these things (I wholeheartedly oppose rejoin, see: unherd.com/2026/10/brussels-…) but you can see the logic of all this from the perspective of a progressive PLP/Labour Party.

I’ve no skin in the game but fair play to Carrick, learned from Fergie that no one is undroppable. I’m sure Fernandes will feel smug if they get beat and he’s sacked but I’m glad Carrick has principles

First one through the door, reminds me much of the Lib Dem periodicals that used to come through my Nan’s door (meant as a compliment) big focus on what councils around the country are doing and aiming to appear serious. Apparently the first issue of more to come!

The Prime Minister presented a special recognition award at the Pride of Britain Awards to honour the founders of Andy’s Man Club, Elaine and Luke. In 2016, Andy Roberts, Elaine’s son and Luke’s brother-in-law, tragically took his own life at just 23 years old. The pair went on to create Andy's Man Club, a male suicide prevention charity that has grown from a single group in Halifax to more than 360 groups nationwide. Through its mission to break the stigma around men’s mental health, Andy’s Man Club has saved thousands of lives and inspired men to speak up when they need help 🤝

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

President Trump is directly tying waiving Russian sanctions to the release of the freed American Stephen Hubbard, despite denying he gave anything to Putin.

Burnham is, by far and away, the most popular politician in the country. Something you’d have no idea about if you only consumed political news on X. The reality distortion field is as effective as ever!

Stockport are the only team in England's top four leagues to have won their last five games in all comps, and they've done so while conceding just one goal. County are cooking and sit top of League One. 🧑‍🍳🔵 📸 @StockportCounty

William Hague declares Trump the worst president of his lifetime, and struggles to see how anyone could have a different opinion. “This mishandling of world affairs … is the most serious development and negative development in the world since the Second World War.“ @StigAbell | @WilliamJHague

In Manchester City's centurion season of 17/18, Stockport County lost in the National League North Play-Offs to Chorley. Incredible that we might potentially see a storyline in which, just a decade later, they could meet in the Championship.

👟 Nearly 100,000 more 11-16 year olds are completely inactive than in 2018. Dame @cj_dinenage, Chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, and Lord Tony Sewell are backing our Fewer Screens, More Sport campaign. We’re calling for a Right to Sport: at least five hours of extracurricular activity a week for every pupil, with two of those hours spent playing sport.

Was talking to someone a month or two ago about how everything at the moment feels very “end of days” Social media algorithm amplification of negative stuff obviously doesn’t help but things seem more mental than normal at the moment.
I’m just sort of getting on with life, but in the last few weeks a number of things have made it apparent that the world I have grown up in and trusted in is about to fall apart In seven months, the leadership of Germany and France will be fundamentally different Who knows what Trump will have done by then It all feels like everything is about to go horribly, permanently wrong

If Burnham is raising Brexit to get votes, it makes sense, but I agree with everything @edballs says here, if it’s a serious enterprise it is likely to backfire badly. Hard to see any form of closer relationship which won’t involve enormous financial contributions or some form of freedom of movement

Our Welfare 2030 inquiry has uncovered over 3,000 areas where the majority of working-age people are on out-of-work benefits. See them on our interactive map at welfare2030.org.uk🔎 State of Dependency, part one of the inquiry, set out the principles of a new welfare system that stops this tragedy of wasted potential👇
