So in my rush to sign up for something I may have fucked up and lost $200 It’s more of an annoyance than a big issue and there’s still a good chance it wasn’t actually a problem, but still

We made a specific policy decision in 2009 to stall housing construction in order to prop up boomer property values. That disenfranchised an entire generation
I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time. We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s. We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN. For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee. In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it. Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further. nytimes.com/2026/10/25/nyreg…

One of the baseline beliefs for a lot of these MAGA types is that "law abiding good person" is a class of people and not at all impacted by a person's actions. Whether Joel's friend broke the rules doesn't matter, because he is *by definition* a good rule following man.
Yes, happy to explain. I don’t think it’s wise to let your opinion of an entire immigration policy be dictated by outlier cases, tragic cases, or sad stories. I also support the second amendment even when there are tragic cases of gun violence. I support ICE and I believe mass deportations are necessary. I believe in law and order and I believe in justice. So does Samuel Sey. I don’t fault ICE for doing its job. I also believe in helping friends when you can, and also believe that mercy is sometimes appropriate. I know Samuel—he’s a good man of integrity. He has made good faith effort to file the right paperwork and comply with the law. He didn’t deceive or purposefully break the law. He would make an excellent American citizen. I hope he can become one someday. There are many other similar cases, I’m sure. It doesn’t change my opinion. All we can do is support justice as well as we can, and extend mercy where appropriate to the best of our ability. You might find this inconsistent, but I don’t. It’s just part of living in a messy world.

Gentrification is caused by lack of development. If you place a limit on new housing, then you have a fixed population which will get replaced by newcomers. You have to build to accommodate population growth

Jfc, politics isn't therapy, we're never going to interrogate our trauma or whatever. You get in and you do as much as you can before subsapient swing voters get bored of you.
Real talk - I worry that winning will paper over our party’s bigger problems and slow us down from doing deeper interrogating and work necessary to build long-term sustainable power, let alone what we need in order to win in 2028. amandalitman.substack.com/p/…

This is fucking cool, not sure how useful it’ll be but hopefully some part of it eventually makes its way over to Ukraine
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

It seems we may need to cut the cables
Just got quoted $2,400 to paint a 23 by 13 foot living room. The 4 gallons of paint it takes to do the job costs about $110 at Home Depot, or around $160 if you want Sherwin Williams. This is not a particularly skilled job. You went to trade school, not medical school. You own a brush and a roller. Stop ripping people off, contractors.

NATO involvement in Libya was enforcing a UN Security Council measure that had zero votes against it & was supported by the Arab League, African countries and even Libyans because Gaddafi was so horrible.

The NYC subway is both safer than Fox News viewers would believe, but also unacceptably disorderly by any honest urbanist standard. We must demand better.
Hey, NYT, if you're telling people whether the subways are "safer" or not than they used to be, here's the data points you should use! You're welcome. 1/3

I didn’t realize we were still doing the “Flint still doesn’t have clean water” bit
Former Democrats Michelle Nard and Cynthia Haynes of Flint talk about how they became Republicans: “I could always see my mother saying, ‘Always vote blue.’ Blue not doing us right. Blue definitely didn’t do Flint right. We’re still dealing with poisoned water.”

Pretty hilarious (but also sad) how the “first generation immune to propaganda” has no beliefs outside of what TikTok tells them

At a certain point, you just have to overrule this kind of thing. The central government needs to take it out of their hands. Celebrating blocking a low-cost grocery store that provides both jobs and essential goods, after a relentless 4-year campaign, is simply unnaceptable.

Even with how astonishingly corrupt as the entire Trump administration is, they keep finding ways to surprise me. This would be instant impeachment in a healthy democracy
The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

US energy company execs have resigned in disgust as the Trump family is caught secretly expediting the funneling of $25 billion from a sanctioned Russian energy giant in exchange for allowing Russians to obtain a natural gas project in Alaska. According to investigations by The New York Times and Financial Times, Russia's Novatek allegedly concealed its financial involvement in the American project through a UAE-linked intermediary. Gentry Beach, a longtime Trump ally and close friend of Donald Trump Jr., signed an agreement with Novatek to pursue natural gas development in Alaska. Reuters documented the arrangement in February. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin discussed this cooperation on the Alaska energy project with Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine. The controversy deepened when Polar Train LNG's CEO, Joel Riddle, raised concerns about concealed Russian financing and possible sanctions violations. He departed in September, followed by other senior executives. The Financial Times also described discussions about a potential arrangement under which Novatek would provide technology for the Alaska project in exchange for sanctions relief benefiting its Arctic LNG 2 development in Siberia. According to The New York Times, Riddle and two other departing executives warned the Trump administration about the Russian financing and urged officials to investigate. The White House maintains that the project was mentioned only briefly and that no detailed discussions took place. There is no established evidence that Kushner or Witkoff knew about the allegedly concealed financing. Polar Train LNG denies wrongdoing. The central question is how a sanctioned Russian energy company became involved in a major American energy venture while Putin was discussing potential economic cooperation with Trump's representatives and a longtime Trump family associate was pursuing a separate agreement with the same Russian company. Selling Alaska to the Russians or selling Ukraine to the Russians - to the Trump family it's all the same. ft.com/content/e9cfbfbb-e65a…
