“Arabs don’t produce literature” is really something you can only say if you’ve never had a moment’s contact with genuine civilization. A mind totally consumed by television and self-help books.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Novel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

The SNP are doing the same thing we do in England = SNPbad!
The SNP have been using Holyrood’s powers to recreate a ‘Whitehall’ in Edinburgh. This is a mistake. We need to push power down to regions, cities, towns and communities.

Split Fife between Tayside, Edinburgh and FV, and Borders between Edinburgh and South, plus punt Moray across to Aberdeen (for Health Board reasons). Job done!
A decent run thru the issues from Keith here, but the take on what’s actually being proposed has missed a crucial point, the publication of this map in 2022; the result of our bottom up approach to determine the REP areas, which are the baseline for this PfG/ PSR discussion;

Since devolution in 1999, Scotland's economic strength has been growing at just about the USA and EU rate. Not something we talk about much is it?

Clearly there were two stories the Scottish press pack could lead with in the aftermath of Burnham's speech... a. The biggest reform to pensions in a generation. b. A claim that Swinney inadvertently hurt the PM's feelings. No contest really!

Scotland’s Economy Doesn’t Stop at Council Boundaries meanwhilescotia.medium.com/s…
How Scotland is governed matters as much as the who. The SNP's proposed local government plans would be the greatest centralisation of the devolution era & modern Scotland. My weekend essay now on my site. gerryhassan.com/blog/how-sco…

For 23 years the UK has been discussing building a 2km stretch of tarmac. No end in sight.
“Principally, it’s a matter for London” Prime Minister Andy Burnham refuses to commit to building a third runway at Heathrow airport and says “you’ve got to hear the voice of people [in London] first” #BBCLauraK bbc.co.uk/news/live/cj4zwkp2…

idk if this is a stupid question, do other countries not make tv shows that are good. i enjoy many non-english films, is there Spanish Mad Men? as it stands, this mostly just feels like a list of every tv show ive ever heard of, so, kind of a useless exercise.

My one takeaway from thinking about local authority reorganisation in Scotland is, that Fife should no longer exist..

The UK is screwed...
Pretty depressing that in modern Britain it takes three years and £237m to build something like... this. As @BritainRemade have pointed out, the Faroe Islands opened the Sandoy Tunnel in 2023 after spending £99m (£107m in today's money) over about four years. It is 10 kilometres long.

When every answer is mined for a gotcha, every disagreement reduced to a row and every nuance punished as weakness, politicians quickly learn to stick to the script. You can’t complain about rehearsed politics while rewarding it.
This. It's why political thought in Scotland has become so small. Debate in Holyrood is nothing more than standing up, one after the other, and reading aloud. No one is forced to defend their ideas or think on their feet to develop new arguments.

Not meaning to have a go, but shops selling vapes and vape shops are two different things. There certainly aren't 250 vape shops in Dundee for example.
Hands up - haven’t read the full piece so perhaps this is explained. But scotland alone in 2024 had over 7k shops selling vapes. That number seems far too low?

An excellent piece this. A good reminder --- however awkward it may be --- that Scotland's economic overperformance of the rest of Britain since the late 1990s is overwhelmingly thanks to the success of just two cities and their economic city regions.

It would be classic Scottish Labour if a former Baroness replaced a Lord as their next leader.

Sounds interesting, but doesn’t a rumour like this risk paralysing the housing market until it is either confirmed or ruled out? Who is going to willingly pay thousands in Stamp Duty now if they could then be hit with an annual tax later? Buyers may simply hold off.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham is strongly considering replacing council tax and stamp duty with a 0.48% annual tax on a home's current value
