I am part of the Graduate Student Council for IU's Brain and Psychological Sciences Department. We are trying to get a grasp on the field level norms and expectations for qualifying exams in order to better advocate for students. Please comment on your quals experience! Thanks!
Friends who have done phds in psychology or neuroscience, could you help me with something? What did you have to do for your qualifying exam/comps/advancement to candidacy?
It's a strange experience when the last week of summer is loaded with the same degree of anxiety as a typical finals week. Almost done with qualifying exams!!

Out in Child Dev! What counts as information in early learning? We show that children jointly consider others’ emotional expressions and prior knowledge when exploring a novel causal toy, providing further evidence for “emotion as information.” w/@hyogweon tinyurl.com/yunk399u

Some people say grad school is a marathon, not a sprint. It's neither. It's not a race at all. It's about becoming part of - and contributing to - an intellectual and professional community.

In honor of normalizing failure I would like to announce that I did not receive the #NSFGRFP! Receiving overwhelming positive reviews has only encouraged me to continue on with my research program focused on how differing sources of feedback affect STEM learning in children.

Fortunate to be part of such an amazing research team during the start of the pandemic. They all helped me gain the skills and confidence to continue developmental research under any circumstances. Excited to let(zoom based) data collection for my first year project at IU begin!
Our lab was featured in @Stanford News for our research continuity efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic! news.stanford.edu/?p=37866 It provides a fascinating glimpse into how the pandemic impacted different fields (biology, geology, physics, and psychology).

Starting work on my first year project, broadly about how the source of feedback affects educational outcomes. Just curious, how would you prefer to receive feedback on a math task?
