"Say the black, do the red" would obviously be an improvement, but it's nowhere near enough. Due to a sick child and other factors I attended Mass at a local NO parish yesterday. To the best of my knowledge, the 40ish priest "said the black and did the red." Yet the entire environment was an exercise in anti-evangelization: • An army of Eucharistic ministers. • Everyone dressed for the golf course or watching a football game. • Insipid music. • A forgettable homily that could have been written by AI. • Bland, uninspiring architecture. Yes, the Mass was valid and graces were available. But everything about the environment was geared toward blocking any graces that might be received. And this parish experience is typical, perhaps even better than average (after all, he "said the black and did the red!"). To be clear, I'm not blaming anyone at that parish, nor am I mad at them. They are simply doing what they have been taught and what everyone does these days. I'm sad, not mad. But this is what I mean when I say that the status quo in the Catholic Church today is broken and often leads souls away from Christ. We need to question *everything* we do (apart from what is divinely given) and kill our non-sacred sacred cows. Making small changes like "say the black, do the red" just isn't enough to address the crisis we are currently in—it's a bandaid when surgery is needed.
