Sho Miyake made his first NYC visit a little over a year ago, fresh off his Locarno win for TWO SEASONS, TWO STRANGERS, in support of our Shiguéhiko Hasumi carte blanche. A #JAPANCUTS favorite, he's returning next month, now the subject of an extensive retro at @Metrograph!

“Breaking Free: The Films of Anja Breien” opens September 11th at @Metrograph.
Anja Breien’s politically engaged, unapologetically feminist, irony-fluent oeuvre encompasses both documentary and fiction films, perhaps her best known work in the latter category her decade-spanning Wives trilogy; the first entry, released in 1975, depicting three women bailing on their domestic routines for a three-day spree in Oslo, was conceived as a rejoinder to John Cassavetes’s 1970 'Husbands'.
Presented in new restorations from the National Library of Norway and with the support of the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York, Metrograph offers a rare opportunity to discover—or rediscover—one of North European cinema’s most essential auteurs.
