Absolutely massive loss of the best human being @meshach_pierre
Last week our good friend Meshach Pierre died “in his place in the world” - Guyana. Meshach was in the 2018 Diploma class & will be deeply missed by his classmates & WildCRU friends. Egil’s words sum up the man, his dreams & the tragedy of a life cut short bit.ly/3zyI8an

Replying to @elonmusk
You should look up “selection bias” — if you actually want to gain a better understanding of the table. Do you think the Indian and Chinese people in the U.S. are just randomly drawn from their populations? Many of them are accepted to top U.S. universities.

❌ We NEVER want to see a sign like this ever again. ❌ The next government has the power to make that happen. They can end the need for food banks.

Out today!📣 Pindondang et al. used camera-trap data to predict suitable habitat for Asian tapirs across Sumatra, finding only 36% of the most critical habitat is formally protected. They highlight priority areas for conservation of the Endangered species: doi.org/m6mg

This is hilarious. Anyone looking for a good example for correlation not meaning causation should look no further! #idoimpact
When I see politicians say stuff like this (and most parties are guilty of it) I've always assumed they knew it's actually nonsense but did it anyway. But in recent years I've started to have my doubts.

I will be recruiting two new PhD students to start in Feb 2025, to join a lively social-ecological research team working on protected areas. This is a competitive opportunity that involves applying for internal scholarships; I will support two or three applicants. If interested./

In our new publication, we show that Ambatovy, one of the two large-scale operational mines in #Madagascar, has more negative impacts on nature than previously assumed, as it leads to #forestdegradation spillovers from #biodiversityoffsets!

It's hard to imagine a more severe dereliction of duty: "The Greek coastguard has been accused of causing the deaths of more than 40 migrants in the Mediterranean over a number of years – including nine who were allegedly thrown overboard into the sea and allowed to drown. Victims said they had either been thrown into the sea or cast afloat in damaged inflatable rafts before they could make asylum claims in Greece. One man said the Greek coastguard had thrown him into the sea with his hands zip-tied together, saying: “They wanted me to die.”" from the @Independent Unlike our @RNLI ; which is a charitable organisation with incredibly brave volunteers, who put their lives in danger to rescue the vulnerable at sea; the Greek Coastguard is a paramilitary organisation. Treating refugees as cargo that can be dumped at sea is part of the increasing dehumanisation of people forced to flee their homes. As the far right grows in strength across Europe and to some degree in the UK we must be vigilant to speak up for truth, justice and compassion.
