THE LAST CARVE ON LAMPKIN LANE
Every year the old man on Lampkin Lane carved one pumpkin and left it on his porch until it rotted. But on this fateful year he carried his jack-o-lantern to the porch railing and set it down. From the sidewalk the face looked almost unfinished. From the street it looked like it was waiting. At the corner a shape stood under the broken lamp. It did not walk. It simply turned its head, slowly, until the blank white surface faced the house. The man went inside. When he looked back through the glass window, the pumpkin had been turned so that its carved eyes pointed toward the corner. The figure had not moved. The candle burned lower. Neither of them blinked.
On October 25, 1978, John Carpenter unleashed “The Night He Came Home.” Shot for just $300K, Halloween grossed over $47M and introduced the world to Laurie Strode in Jamie Lee Curtis’s film debut. It remains the purest, sharpest slasher film of them all, 48 years of unmatched fear.
