I went full gas, hit 338W, applied the 0.95 multiplier, and proudly gave myself a 321W FTP.
But I wasn’t measuring my physiology. I was just measuring my ability to game a protocol.
My actual 60-minute power? 297W. A massive 25-watt difference.

I cheated myself for years without even realizing it.
Back in 2012, I bought my first power meter, did a 20-minute test, and scored a 321W FTP (5.4 W/kg). I felt like an absolute pro.
Turns out, that number was completely wrong. And it basically ruined my season. 🧵

Antonio Tiberi becomes World Championship ITT U19, despite losing +- 20” at the start due to crank failure.

I struggle with a paradox. Here, we´re comparing mathematical models, internal vs external load variables & big data findings to optimise training. Meanwhile, many of world's very best distance runners will laugh at you & run from if you ask them to wear a HR belt or count km!

This is brilliant from @AaronJCoutts. ’Rainbow RPE’ scales are not valid. If you use them, there’s a good chance you’re not measuring perceived exertion. But they look good right?? ☕️🐸🌈

My personal template for 60min power test pacing has emerged. First two times, I was not fit enough to push 60min. Last 3 have settled in. If HR is at/under 90%max at 20min, I can sustain that power to 60min, with great effort. What does your template look like?

Athletes, focusing on and obsessing on that 2-5% performance gain is pointless if you haven’t focused on the 1st 95%. This is the % that actually matters most. You need to actually bake a cake before thinking about the cherry placement on top.

Instead of me singing "The 12 Days of Christmas", here are 12 geeky, but potentially instructional experiments for amateur endurance athletes to perform on themselves during 2019. Hey, it´s how I roll.

A new Danish study shows that micro blood doping (only 135 ml) can increase the performance by up to nearly five percent. First time studying such small doses. Very worrying reading as it will be almost impossible to detect. Full article (in Danish) here: sport.tv2.dk/2018-12-05-chok…

Young athletes often become crushed under the massiveness of the gap between where they are and that "big goal" they set for themselves. We must support their goals, but help them break them up into smaller pieces. Their most important comparison becomes.. themselves, yesterday.

Surprising strength-training findings from @BradSchoenfeld: 1 set (8-12 reps to failure, 3X/wk for 8 weeks) increases max strength and muscular endurance just as much as 3 or 5 sets. But the extra sets do build muscle *size.* outsideonline.com/2340676/ne…
