We had our first Story Raid this week and it was BRILLIANT! They're a Swedish concept where several storytellers arrive at a school together: staff know what’s going to happen, but pupils have no idea. Each storyteller knocks on a classroom door and walks in: “Sorry to disturb you but I’m looking for people to tell a quick story to. Can I tell one to you?” A 10-minute story follows, before the storyteller leaves as suddenly as they came. This is happening all over the school. A ‘storyraid’ is in progress! You can do them yourself or @Dominicjk and @emilyahennessey can point you in the right direction. youtu.be/cgryjicuuEM

Our outdoor space is coming together at the coffee shop, don’t suppose anybody has any contacts who could help us out with mates rates on plants and planters - it’s quite a big area to jazz up!

7 years ago, I attended a meeting with local GP @markspen9999, we instantly clicked & talked passionately about how health, education & other agencies could, and should, work much more closely together for the good of our children & families. We went for a drink to discuss ideas & got all excited about the concept of a coffee shop & how it would be a great place for people to come together, to feel a sense of belonging & where individuals, groups & professions could support one another to improve lives. 7 years of conversations, planning and implementing & our ridiculous idea is very nearly a reality due to the incredible kindness and generosity of @FCMS_NW who have made it possible to take @StriveFleetwood to a level we only ever dreamed of. Thank you Mark and our incredible friends at FCMS - we can't really put in to words how grateful we are.

My mom hired a writer to sit down with my 95-year-old grandmother in India and document stories from her life. They met weekly for two years. The process brought my grandmother immense joy—the result will bring my family joy for years to come. I think everyone should do this: My mom found the writer through an elderly care service in India. Her request was for someone who would record and transcribe stories from my grandmother. The writer was a recent university graduate named Raika Sengupta. The process began shortly after the pandemic lockdowns ended in India. Raika would visit with my grandmother every week. Depending on my grandmother’s energy, they would meet for an hour or less. Each time, they would pick up where they left off on her life journey. Raika would record the conversation and then transcribe the recordings—mostly in my grandmother’s own words, with some stylistic improvements where necessary. My grandmother is an AMAZING storyteller, so the writing naturally flowed. The weekly meeting became a beautiful ritual. During a time when there wasn’t much to look forward to because of COVID lockdowns and a diminished social life, my grandmother looked forward to these sessions. They made her feel important again—such a powerful thing at her age. Once the writing was complete, my mother—a beautiful writer herself—took the pen on editing and converting the stories into a book. She worked with my grandmother on the flow and filling in the gaps. They added chapters on special people in her life—siblings, friends, etc. We wanted to add photos to the book, so the whole family got involved. When I was in India in January, I got to sit with my mom, dad, and grandmother and go through old photos to include. We uncovered some real gems. It was beautiful. The book is almost complete. We will have enough copies made so that all of her family can have a copy to remember her by when she is gone. I really believe everyone should do this. One of the saddest things is seeing our grandparents feel they are no longer “important” to anyone. The process reminded my grandmother how much she is loved and how much she still has to offer the world. If you enjoyed this or learned something, follow me @SahilBloom for more in the future.

Doesn’t get much recognition, but there is now a Youth Mental Health qualification certified by Ofqual, from Year 9 onwards. Only requires 6 hours participation. This is something I am proud to be involved in, and will always make time for schools to deliver this for them. If you would like more information, please email [email protected]

This thread is really disheartening. Tech is not an evil in schools. We live in an ever growing digital world. We owe it to our children to prepare them for a rich digital present, let alone future. I see the reasons why tech is so hated is schools. It nearly always is due to poor investment, zero strategy around digital investments & lack of training. That doesn't mean that the tech is wrong! That's on us. I get it, I'm of an age where I was taught on blackboards & dry wipe whiteboards & I'd like to think that I turned out fine! But in 2023, not exposing our children to a digital world is a huge let down to them. If we don't expose our children to tech & teach them good digital citizenship, then they'll only learn it through the wrong means. To say "We used to have a tech guy. He was ok but we never really knew what he did. We cancelled the contract and agreed to spend the money on Fox’s Crunch Creams." This is unbelievably utterly disrespectful to the entire community of IT Professionals doing an amazing job in schools in usually very difficult & challenging circumstances. If you didn't understand what he did, learn! Isn't one of the 4 C's, Collaboration? Work together with your tech personnel & digital leads, to help develop a working digital strategy for your schools! Instead "we ditched him for biscuits!" What a horrible thing to say & paints a picture of a very toxic culture in school. I won't even begin to get into the choice of biscuits! I get it, we all miss the good old days. I'm the first fan of nostalgia. But until we perfect the Flux Capacitor, those days aren't coming back. And neither should they. We have grown so much as a society because of tech, we have made leaps & bounds in progression. It's high time to embrace it, not demonise it! #EdTech #EduTwitter #Education #DigitalStrategy #DigitalTransformation #4Cs #Collaboration #WorkTogether #United #TechForAll #DigitalDivide #Toxic #Culture #Nostalgia #FluxCapcitor #BadBiscuits #Whiteboards #Teaching #DigitalCitizenship #Safeguarding #OnlineSafety
So let’s say that you applied for a job at my school. And when you came for your interview, you learned that we didn’t have any electronic whiteboards. Every class had a big dry wipe and every teacher was an expert at using it. Would you accept a job offer?
