I’m a marine scientist working from local to global scales on natural solutions to reduce disaster & climate risk. I advise govt’s, (re)insurers, development banks, enviro & aid groups. latimes.com/opinion/story/20…

In midst of bad #hurricane season, our FREE case study helps teach students about decisions, trade-offs #coastal residents must make in face of increasing #climate threats #resilience @HamedMoftakhari @loraharris @MikeWBeck @DrJessWhitehead @J_Vukomanovic sesync.org/resources/do-good…
It has been a great week to discuss projects and partnerships with colleagues @AXAResearchFund, #AXAClimate, and @AXAIM in Paris; the hospitality and focus on #riskmanagement and #NatureBasedSolutions is much appreciated.
Putting a $ value on the benefits of natural habitats to reduce #floods risk. 👏👏 prof @MikeWBeck for your research on building coastal resilience naturally @AXA Chair @ucsc
Great opportunities to work with our extended team!!
Work with a dynamic team on equitable Nature-based Solutions -10 partners across 3 pilot sites in Miami, Belize, USVI. Find job postings on usf.edu/work-at-usf/careers/…. @AEESProfs @BlackinMarSci @NSBE @sacnas @EngineeringUSF @Usfanthropology @USFCMS @MikeWBeck @bzarger @landolf
I will be giving the Kraw lecture tomorrow (Wed) evening in Silicon Valley on climate change, #riskmanagement, and #naturebasedsolutions. The link below has registration for In Person or Virtual On-Line.

I couldn’t be happier for you Dr. Kendall-Bar; the pleasure to work with you was mine.
I'm so grateful that @UCSC takes #SciComm seriously. Congrats to fellow awardee @rpocisv!
I couldn't have done this work without my phenomenal UCSC mentors and partners @MikeWBeck, @Erika_Check, @UCSC_SciCom and @openlab_

Glad to partner with @coralprof and @MiamiRosenstiel on this @DARPA #reefense project featured on @60Minutes. Our @UCSC science is central to designing & valuing the ROI of #Reefs and #Mangroves for Coastal Defense sciencedirect.com/science/ar….

Nice to see our work picked up by @WEF; critical for the uptake of #naturebasedsolutions for #riskmanagement.
Mangroves and coral reefs: Two natural and cost-effective solutions to coastal floods weforum.org/agenda/2022/06/m…
ROI for Coral Reef and Mangrove Flood Protection.
We map Present Value to identify 'break even' costs of mangrove #restoration for #riskmanagement across the Carib. Assumes these are 30-yr green #infrastructure projects at 4% discount rate.
sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

ALT Present value of mangrove for flood reduction per ha. Values assume that habitats a 30-year infrastructure asset @4% discount rate. These values represent the break-even point for restoration. For example, near Port au Prince, Haiti mangrove restoration projects that cost less than $168,000 per hectare would have positive return on investment.
We Assess the Return on Investment (ROI) for Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for Flood Protection
* Mangroves and Reefs can deliver positive ROI in > 20 countries across Carib;
* Results are robust to changes in Discount Rate and Benefits Timing

Some research takes me out of my comfort zone.
Message: Artificial structures (seawalls) don't just create physical barriers, they create mental ones. They breakdown our understanding of what it means to live on coastlines & it's easier to add new scars

The USA will begin to consider nature in national accounts e.g., GDP. With @WorldBank we show that US mangroves provide more than $27 Billion to national wealth for flood protection alone. Thank You Mangroves! Home-Grown Wealth.
openknowledge.worldbank.org/…
Exciting #EarthDay announce that the US will value natural capital. Currently we only value what we Take from Nature (literally everything is based on natural resources). We should value what nature gives in clean water, heat reduction & flood protection.

Exciting #EarthDay announcement that the US will finally be valuing the capital from our natural assets.
Working with @USGS we show that the wealth of US coral reefs for flood protection is more than $122 Billion!

This article discusses rising flood risk and the appropriate use of nature-based and other solutions for addressing them. Since the magazine comes from the folks who do Annual Reviews- the risks and advice are well documented.

Great to work with @thebenshouse on this piece for @UCSCscience highlighting the value of reefs (and wetlands) for storm protection and the innovative ways to invest in them.
I feel lucky I got to write about @MikeWBeck again. Coral is #infrastructure!

Reefs are critical globally for climate adaptation & flood protection (science links below); we can use these benefits to save them. I enjoyed talking with @tongscott on @NPR @hereandnow about how we can use insurance to recover reefs.
