Categorizing Chagall, a proud Jew and proud supporter of the state of Israel, as “Eastern European” is a deliberate message.
New Yorkers experience the abundant contributions of our Eastern European neighbors every day. As we pair syrniki with sour cream in Brighton Beach, look in wonder at a Chagall painting at MoMA and banter with babushkas in Rego Park.
Last week, we celebrated Eastern European heritage at Gracie Mansion, because the story of New York City cannot be told without the story of our Eastern European neighbors.
From new immigrants to those who've lived here for generations, Eastern Europeans have built New York City. We owe them a city they can afford to call home.

Michael Walzer published “Just and Unjust Wars,” an attempt to delineate the rights and wrongs of warfare in both its causes and its conduct, in 1977. In the nearly 50 years since, no other book on the subject has matched its influence. The precepts are not complicated: it is just to defend your country from an invasion and it is unjust to invade a country that has not attacked you—although Walzer does allow for exceptions, mostly for humanitarian causes. It is just to assume certain risks to avoid civilian casualties and it is unjust to bomb towns indiscriminately to compel an enemy to surrender. The justice of going to war—what philosophers call jus ad bellum—is separate from jus in bello, the justice of how a war is fought.
The war in Gaza has made Walzer rethink one of the book’s fundamental principles. “The wall between jus ad bellum and jus in bello, which had sustained his theory for almost half a century, was no longer sturdy,” Jordi Graupera writes. As Walzer said to him, “There is a sense in which the carnage of Gaza, the ongoing carnage, simply made the war unjust.” Read about why a philosopher of war is now reconsidering his seminal work: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/T7…

Cenk Uygur put together an obviously antisemitic ad for Abdul El-Sayed trying to blame Israel and its Jewish supporters for higher grocery prices. It might as well be translated to German and have a Weimar Republic stamp. But no one should care about Cenk. He’s a fat loser who screams nonsense and doesn’t matter.
What does matter is that Abdul El-Sayed agrees with him. This is his message. He wants to raise your taxes, increase costs for businesses, and then scapegoat Israel and its Jewish supporters for inevitable consequences of his shitty left-wing policies. All while prioritizing supporting anti-American extremists abroad over the actual interests of Michigan voters.
I feel like the replies were very predictable

I’m so sick of the term “settler violence” that the media and politicians throw around. As if 700,000 families—men, women, and children—are somehow walking around being violent toward Palestinians every single day. It’s a smear campaign of another world.
In reality, 99% are completely ordinary people living their lives in peace in Judea and Samaria. You know, the place where Jews have lived continuously for 3,200 years. And where the very word “Jew” comes from.
Judea → Jew.
The ones who actually are violent make up less than 1% of all settlers, and they don’t just attack Palestinians. They even attack Israelis and the IDF. And no one likes or accepts the violence they engage in. Those people are a problem, and both I and everyone I know distance ourselves from the violence they commit.
But they are a grain of sand being used as a lie to demonize hundreds of thousands of people.
There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Did you know that when Jews defend themselves against terrorists, this is also categorized as “settler-related violence”?
Last year there were over 5,000 attacks against Jews in Judea and Samaria. How often do you hear about that in the media? Or from the lips of European politicians, who are otherwise completely manically obsessed with Israel? There’s actually one attack against Jews every two hours, all year round.
David and Rachel were driving through the village of Huwara and were nearly killed by a Palestinian terrorist. David is shot in the head, arm, and body, but manages to neutralize the terrorist.
David is bleeding heavily, and Rachel is screaming for help. But what do the 30–40 Palestinians who come running over to them do? They take out their phones, film, whistle, and laugh at them.
And how does OCHA then categorize this incident afterward? How does the incident fit into the statistics? As a quote: “Jewish settler attack against innocent Palestinian.” Let that sink in.
So maybe we shouldn’t put so much weight on what the UN, OCHA, and Western media tell us about the facts on the ground. At least take it with a truckload of salt.
Think twice when you hear the word “settler violence.”
