The brain uses dimensionality reduction as a built-in feature of its wiring. Network geometry shapes the transformation of task representations across the human cortex nature.com/articles/s41593-0… #neuroscience

Network geometry shapes the transformation of task representations across the human cortex

Nature Neuroscience - The dimensionality of intrinsic brain connectivity systematically shapes how task representations compress and expand across the cortex, and activity flow modeling shows the...

Chunking: What working memory gains and loses

Chunking compresses information into fewer meaningful units, reducing working memory demands. During chunking, neural representations in the prefrontal cortex exhibit reduced dimensionality and are...

Smart isn't the same as aware. And your brain's software is also its hardware. Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be nature.com/articles/d41586-0… #neuroscience

Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be

Nature - Large language models can mimic thought and feeling with uncanny skill. But evidence from neuroscience suggests that intelligence alone is not enough for subjective experience.

Robust inference via top-down feedback and neural variability in recurrent vision models

Greco et al. show that top-down feedback improves the sensory robustness of recurrent vision models when combined with neural variability via dropout. Neural variability prevents unit-level co-adap...

A Relational Code for Objects in Primate Frontal Cortex

When we remember a scene, we recall both the locations of individual objects and their spatial arrangement. Yet, how neurons encode this arrangement alongside individual locations is unknown. In this...
