Mascot horror can be a very exciting genre when handled with passion and the desire to be creative. It invites players to come along for a wild ride where character and atmosphere can be explored in a unique and unfolding way, built on a foundation of interactive gameplay. When it is done right, it respects the audience's time and desire to discover.
It isn't just promising something "could be" in the shadows, its actually putting something there to find.

i haven’t seen giggleland myself so i can’t speak on how good or bad it is, however it does give me an opportunity to say that i think their advertising approach of “finally, a mature mascot horror game” is not good, both in this case and in general
i really think these projects need to fully commit to themselves, confidently make your own identity and market yourself on your own merits instead of putting down your contemporaries to make yourself seem bigger, i promise you more people will be-

Twitters whole "character redesign" obsession always feels very mean spirited and pretentious
Only ever directed at indie creators who are getting to make their dream projects and the reaction is always "Actually it should look like this! I know your characters better than you!"
