Enter: EthCoordinate. tl;dr: EthCoordinate is a crypto-native organization born inside the EthStaker community, bringing together separate efforts under one umbrella to help with Ethereum governance coordination, support Forkcast, increase stakeholder engagement on proposed or upcoming EIPs and, of course, continue providing software, tooling, and technical support for home stakers. EthStaker started in 2020 when a loosely connected group of Ethereum enthusiasts joined efforts to speed up the development of the beacon chain. The organization steadily evolved, incorporating as a 501(c)4 nonprofit and taking up initiatives around independent participants of Ethereum's consensus mechanism, aka home stakers. Throughout the years, it has played a decisive role in coordinating the launch and operation of devnets, testnets, and mainnet hard fork upgrades; facilitating information flows and generally connecting dots that needed connecting. This year's tectonic organizational changes in the ecosystem have opened up functional gaps in Ethereum coordination. To close these gaps and continue supporting the network, EthStaker's core members are joined by mission-aligned fresh blood to aggregate efforts under one name to produce greater results than operating independently. EthCoordinate is a natural evolution of EthStaker; as Ethereum mainnet heads to its third radical consensus protocol change at a steady pace, it’s time for EthStaker to recalibrate around what Ethereum’s evolving community needs. Our mission is to facilitate interaction between stakeholders of the ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of the Ethereum network and to provide continuity for governance operations. We believe that the Ethereum mainnet is an unparalleled bedrock for the augmentation of humanity's productivity output and that ETH, the asset, is the token that aligns the incentives of all actors involved. We stand up for our values, combining technical rigor with pragmatism for Ethereum to continue being the most accessible and credibly neutral global blockchain. The team is 10 long-tenured Ethereum professionals and currently our main work streams are: ⇥ Maintain a high-quality venue for independent stakers to remain engaged and informed ⇥ Facilitate coordination around core protocol development and adjacencies ⇥ Develop and steward Forkcast, the most popular platform to track the research and engineering initiatives around Ethereum's core protocol ⇥ Facilitate research, discussion, and coordination around protocol economics in support of Ethereum's long-term economic health ⇥ Maintain open source tools and documentation used by participants of the consensus set We're energized for this chapter in Ethereum coordination & our role in it.

There are ~8,500 physical nodes on the network of Ethereum validators according to this new study by @alexneumueller. Meanwhile, a 2024 paper recorded ~12,000 nodes on the network, and of those, ~7,000 validator nodes (Brown, Bautista-Gomez, 2024 arxiv.org/pdf/2404.02164). This shows the numbers are not diverging much over time. Yet, there are ~4,000,000 potential "seats" for validators to join! This matters since 1 validator = 1 message sent on the network, every round of finalisation. In the worst case, 470x more messages sent than nodes on the network.. This is a very large overhead that currently stands in the way of achieving faster finality. Today's economic finality is achieved after ~15 minutes. This often means that capital cannot interoperate freely during these 15 minutes, or if it does, it must do so using more brittle assumptions, raising either cost of capital or risk. (Sidenote: The Fast Confirmation Rule strikes in our view a good tradeoff between speed and security assumptions. fastconfirm.it/) Ideally, 1 validator = 1 node = 1 message. With 8,500 validators only, finality would be achieved within seconds, while preserving fidelity of the signal: Every unit of staking ETH would still be casting a vote on finality. Thankfully, with the introduction of MaxEB, the number of validators peaked at ~1,100,000 in summer 2025, and has been trending down since, sitting at 880,000 validators today. This number must continue to lower if we are to achieve fast finality. Job's not done 🫡
Replying to @alexneumueller
2/ Key findings: 🔹 ~7.87 GWh a year – less than the British Museum 🔹 ~2.37 ktCO₂e – roughly the footprint of 900 UK homes, ~99.98% below pre-Merge 🔹 ~8,522 nodes at ~105 W each – about a laptop. Nodes, not validators, draw the power 🔹 ~56.4% sustainable electricity vs ~43% globally

And you have your beliefs based on what? Nothing?! Sexism?! You would know @nixorokish if you were involved with EthStaker community or if you follow core devs work

After an incredible journey, yesterday was my last day at the Ethereum Foundation. Huge thanks to everyone who made my time there unforgettable. I plan to continue contributing to protocol R&D, most likely after a short break.

When people talk about CROPS they seem to focus on the CR, OS and Privacy part. The security part is in my opinion the most important! Without a secure L1 non of this makes any sense and we have taken Ethereums base layer security for granted by now.

The main reason I want ETH to go up: so that I stop reading in my TL complains about the EF not investing in BD. It's tiresome, every few months the same cries.

That's what I think as well xitter.cf/MorphNetrunner/status/…
Now that I think about it, I think it makes more sense for CL to tell EL, like it does with other params

If we add SLOTNUM, EL can figure out seconds per slot, so that wouldn't be an issue. I would still leave voting on the block gas limit (instead of per second), but flag can be set per second

The complicated part is not 6s on its own. It's transition from 12s to 6s (while preserving all other properties), upgrading all tooling to support the transition, and benchmarking

Are you referring to client flags? Or something that is more part of the protocol?

It wasn't heavily tested/benchmarked. And definitely not with BALs as current prototype is based on Fusaka. But as @nero_eth said, block size should half so I also don't see big risk coming from BAL

I agree with you, but only partially. Going to 6 sec is not going to unlock any new use cases. But it's significantly going to improve existing ones! Faster inclusion significantly improves capital efficiency. And faster finality impacts everything.
