2024 has left the building.
Happy new year to my weird, wonderful listeners. Here is a new song - now available on Bandcamp - and there will be more...

This new song from @boardsofcanada is dark, atmospheric, hauntological - all that good stuff✨
Forgive the radio silence 📻
I am still an extant being
and I am still making things -
for me, for you, for everyone else too
✨Please give me some song recommendations ✨
Any genre, any language, any country, any year.
As long as it makes you feel something, and you don't think I'll have heard it.

R.I.P. David Lynch, January 20, 1946 — January 2025. Here is Angelo Badalamenti sharing his and David’s composition process for “Twin Peaks.”

What would be the best/most accessible way to let people preview the (many) demos I'm working on? 🤔
A mix? A livestream? A Soundcloud dump of works-in-progress?
What's the perfect length for a song?
Some claim 2 minutes 42 seconds, and that anything else is a waste.
But surely a song should last as long as it lasts to make itself heard? I know tracks under 2 minutes that feel like epics, and 16-minute songs where every second counts.
There's a relevant bit from @nardwuar's recent interview with @fredagainagain1
@brianeno created the Windows 95 start-up sound, and after making 5-second compositions for months, found returning to longer pieces like having "oceans of time" to play with

RIP Ka, rap's greatest minimalist, Brownsville's finest, inimitably dedicated himself to his city & craft. The master of quiet rage, writing zen koans with unremitting soul & passion. Pain, grief & wisdom in every bar. An artist as pure & real as anyone who ever spit cold facts.
Reminder for other music makers: back-up your work 🔐
I lost a song I'd poured days into all because I didn't have a good back-up process and my tech threw a wobbly.
Auto-save, cloud storage, back-up HDs are friends. To butcher an idiom: make saves while the sun shines ☀️
Rest by the light of the evening star, Maggie Smith ✨
I recently sampled her poignant 1973 recital of John Betjman's poem "Death in Leamington" for a work-in-progress track.
It's strange listening back to it, now.

Massive Attack - Mezzanine is so good ✨
It's also fun to delve into the samples and interpolations the band used throughout the album.
This video from 8MU goes through the most notable samples: youtube.com/watch?v=Z4DPoxvd…
If you:
- find sound effects interesting
- like video games
- like video essays
- have a couple of hours to kill
I recommend @Hbomberguy's deep-dive into the Roblox 'oof', which spirals into a hilarious expose of composer Tommy Tallarico: youtube.com/watch?v=0twDETh6…
The band Tears for Fears received backlash for using AI-generated artwork for their new album cover.
Their response on Instagram? AI generated.
I'm starting to think Tears for Fears may have been replaced by robots 🤖
People semi-regularly ask me about releasing on vinyl
I'd love to one day (maybe for One Tusk's 10yr anniversary?) ✨
But a short run + postage to anywhere outside of my little kingdom would mean charging a LOT - probably too much
I'll keep looking for options, though
There are people who 'opt out' of new music, and I'll never understand it. They retreat to one narrow, nostalgic period - and stay there.
Some of the most moving, creative, resonant music is being made right now.
Seek and ye shall find.
I'm excited to hear the recreated tracks, as well as the new.
'True' lives forever in my head:
