Quick point on batteries and generators that comes up often in our meetings and project discussions: a battery isn't necessarily a generator replacement. It's one piece of the energy equation. 🧵
Most outages are short. 40% of C&I companies say their typical outage lasts under 5 minutes.
A battery covers those instantly, with no start-up gap.
Portugal now requires grid-forming capability and synthetic inertia for new battery deployments that are 45 MW+ or connected to the transmission grid. The rule took effect Oct 23.
Why? More than 1 GW of storage is in their pipeline, and 🔋s can switch quickly between charging and discharging. Regulators want them actively stabilizing frequency and voltage.
We often find the inverter/PCS is more challenging to get right than the DC battery side of a BESS. It can get complicated, but these are the key specs we look at when evaluating one. 🧵⚡️
Certifications. In the US, look for UL 1741 SB and IEEE 1547-2018. Without them, interconnection gets slow or doesn't happen at all. Check the AHJ and utility's specific requirements, some require specific pre-approval / listing.

This is pretty cool
JUST IN: Former SpaceX engineers raised $100M to build self-driving electric freight trains.
Parallel Systems puts batteries and motors directly under shipping containers, letting them move without a traditional locomotive.
-Travels up to 500 miles on a charge
-Recharges in as little as one hour
-Vehicles automatically form and split apart into groups
-Works with standard shipping containers
-Designed to make shorter rail routes competitive with trucks
Parallel is already testing the system across 160 miles of railroad in Georgia.
