On this day in 1728, Captain James Cook was born 🧭 Born in Marton-in-Cleveland, right here in North Yorkshire, the son of a Scottish farm labourer. He grew up in Great Ayton, took his first apprenticeship with a Whitby ship owner and went on to chart more of the world's coastline than any explorer before him. New Zealand, Australia's east coast, the Hawaiian Islands and vast stretches of the Pacific. A farmer's son from the Yorkshire countryside who ended up redrawing the map of the world 🌍

Ellerton Priory was a small, poor Cistercian nunnery in Swaledale, founded around 1200 and housing only about 13 nuns at its peak (and as few as five by 1381). Following the priory's surrender to the Crown in August 1536 it was formally dissolved in 1537.
