What if the biggest reading growth doesn’t come from teaching one more strategy, but from teaching students to think more deeply about what they read?
For our Emergent Bilinguals, real growth happens when students question a text, discuss it, infer, connect ideas, defend their thinking, and return to the text for evidence.
We’re not just teaching students how to answer questions. We’re teaching them how to THINK, make meaning, and communicate that thinking.
That’s where comprehension grows.
That’s where academic language grows.
That’s where readers grow. 📚✨

There is so much power in having students record themselves reading throughout the school year and creating their own digital notebooks.🎙️📚 Students can see their growth, first hand, and note their gains as they navigate through the progress of the school year.
Students listen back, notice their fluency, pacing, expression, pronunciation, and intonation and then make adjustments.
That cycle of record → listen → reflect → adjust → rerecord builds more than reading fluency. It builds self-awareness, confidence, and ownership of language growth.
When students can hear their own progress from the beginning of the year to the end, that is powerful. ✨

Reader’s Theater is such a powerful strategy for Emergent Bilingual students because it supports ALL 4 TELPAS domains at once: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 🎭📚
Students hear fluent language, practice speaking with confidence, build reading fluency and comprehension, and extend their thinking through writing.
Hear it. Read it. Say it. Discuss it. Write it. ✨
That repeated language practice is where growth happens. #TELPAS #EmergentBilinguals #ReadersTheater #BilingualEducation #ELAR
As we work to grow our English learners, collaboration is such an important part of the learning process. Students need meaningful opportunities to read, write, speak, and listen as they develop both language and literacy skills. Here are powerful moments of learning together.

Students spend most of their school day being told what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Is it any wonder that self-management in the classroom is then a challenge for them?
Building these skills requires deliberate practice. See how: bit.ly/3Xb9YCB

Language Connects Us. Unlocking the potential of Emergent Bilingual learners requires us to bridge the gap between their linguistic heritage and our instructional practice. #EBs #ELPS
🙌🏽Day 1 of Region 10 Multilingual Symposium. Dr. Celina Meraz presented an incredible session. I appreciated how she broke down the new ELPS and PLD updates into strategies that, we as teachers, can immediately apply in the classroom for our new school year! @R10Multilingual

One of the fastest feedback routines I know is I Like, I Wish, What If!
Kids share what's working, what they hope could shift, and a fresh idea.
It's a gold mine for peer feedback and group work.

If your kids drop claims with no proof, this routine is for you!
Evidence → Because → Therefore walks kids through the logic one piece at a time.
They pick a quote, say why it matters, and land a claim.

Equality gives every student the same experience. Equity gives every student what they actually need.
For English learners, whole group instruction rarely delivers on that second one. The pace, the language demands, and the pressure to participate in front of everyone are real barriers.

3 quick checks that actually work:
1️⃣ Retrieval practice warm-ups
2️⃣ Turn & teach a partner
3️⃣ Targeted exit tickets
The key:
Ask one clear question, not vague reflection.
Small checks → big learning gains.
