He’s 100% right. It’s crazy how you can be the one betrayed and still end up being the villain if you react. Facts!

Chloe did absolutely nothing wrong. The real problem was a manager who valued a wealthy customer’s spending power more than his employee’s dignity.

The hotel launched an internal investigation. The front office manager was suspended, and the guest was contacted about the complaints involving his behaviour. The hotel also reviewed its policy on harassment and employee boundaries. Chloe was offered her job back with a formal apology. The general manager personally apologised to her. He also offered to transfer her to the guest relations department, where she could continue developing her hospitality career. But Chloe surprised me. She declined the position. She said, “I wanted to work here because I thought professionalism meant treating people with respect. I didn’t realise it meant allowing customers to disrespect you.” The general manager understood her decision. He offered to provide a reference for another hotel, which she accepted. A few weeks later, she secured a position at another luxury hotel. Her new manager explained during the interview that employees were never expected to share personal contact details with guests. When Chloe told me, I felt relieved. But something still bothers me. The front office manager had been more concerned about protecting a wealthy guest’s spending than protecting a young employee who was simply doing her job. And if the general manager hadn’t recognised Chloe that morning, would anyone have investigated her dismissal? My husband thinks the hotel should have permanently banned the guest as well. I agree that employees shouldn’t have to tolerate inappropriate behaviour just because someone spends a lot of money. What would you do? Was Chloe right to refuse to give the guest her personal number, even if it meant losing her job? Should hotels ban wealthy customers who repeatedly make employees uncomfortable? And should a customer’s spending power ever give them the right to demand special treatment that compromises an employee’s personal boundaries?

The next morning, I accompanied Chloe to the hotel to collect her belongings. I asked to speak with the general manager. At first, his assistant explained that he was unavailable. But when I mentioned why we had come, she asked us to wait. About 20 minutes later, a man walked into the reception area. He looked at Chloe and immediately recognised her. “Chloe? What happened? Why aren’t you working today?” Chloe looked confused. Then she explained everything. The general manager listened carefully before asking us to follow him into his office. He explained that the wealthy guest was actually a long-standing customer who had previously been investigated for inappropriate behaviour towards hotel employees. There had been complaints from two other female staff members. One had transferred departments after he repeatedly requested her personal number. Another had resigned after he began sending unwanted messages. The general manager had been reviewing the previous complaints but hadn’t yet received a formal report about Chloe’s incident. He immediately requested the security footage and asked HR to provide the termination records. The footage showed the guest approaching Chloe several times, even after she had politely declined his request. It also showed him pointing angrily at her before going to complain. But the most disturbing discovery came from the manager’s email correspondence. The front office manager had written: “She needs to understand that VIP guests require a different level of attention. If she cannot handle that, we should replace her.” The general manager was furious. He asked HR why an employee had been dismissed without a proper investigation. Nobody had a satisfactory answer.

My 19-year-old daughter was fired from her first job at a luxury hotel because she refused to give a wealthy guest her personal phone number. The hotel manager told her, “Customers like him spend more in one evening than you earn in a year. You should learn how to treat important guests.” But when I visited the hotel to collect her belongings, the general manager recognised my daughter and immediately asked why she had been dismissed. What he revealed about the guest left me speechless. I’m 44, and I live in Atlanta with my husband and our three children. My daughter, Chloe, is 19 and recently started working as a receptionist at a five-star hotel. She had always wanted to work in hospitality, and she was excited when she got the job. She was polite, hardworking and determined to prove herself. Last Friday, she came home crying. I asked what happened. She explained that a wealthy guest had checked into the hotel three days earlier. He was a regular customer who frequently booked the presidential suite. On his second evening, he approached the reception desk and asked Chloe for her personal phone number. She politely declined. He laughed and said, “Come on. I’m not asking for your bank details. Just your number.” She replied, “I’m sorry, sir. I don’t share my personal contact information with guests.” The man became irritated. He complained to the front office manager and accused Chloe of being disrespectful. The following morning, she was summoned to the manager’s office. He told her that the guest was an important client and that she needed to apologise. Chloe explained that she had done nothing wrong. The manager responded, “You are here to make guests feel welcome, not to embarrass them.” She refused to apologise for maintaining her boundaries. He then terminated her employment for what he described as inappropriate customer service. I was furious. My daughter had been dismissed for refusing to give a stranger her private phone number.

Jaylen Brown's grandfather drove a truck across America so he could find the gyms and offer himself up as a sparring partner for heavyweight champions. Willie Brown says the list includes Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston. He was a Marine first. He served a tour in Vietnam in 1963. He wanted to fight for a living and did not believe it would feed a family, so he took the truck job and worked the route around it. "I always knew where the gym was," he said. "At that time, it didn't take that much to find out who is who, so I kept running from city to city." "Once in the '70s I sparred with Joe Frazier in Philadelphia, and he hit me with a left hook down below," Willie said, "and it kept me on the floor of my hotel room for three days." He got older. He was living by himself in Atlanta. In March of 2020, Jaylen brought him to Boston, and he never mentioned the virus. He told his grandfather he needed a trainer and that Willie was the best man for the job. "We said we needed him to help me train and get back ready for the season," Jaylen said, "so he could feel comfortable sticking around here." Willie was 78. He started knocking on his grandson's bedroom door at 7:30 in the morning. He held the pads. He had an NBA All-Star jumping rope and sprinting up and down the street carrying five pound weights. "He has me doing a lot of things I've never done before," Jaylen said. "It's the old way of training. Everything he does is kind of a throwback, but it's good." Jaylen's mother Mechalle watched the two of them go at it every morning. "We didn't want this quarantine, but sometimes things pull you together," she said. Then, right before the league went down to Florida for the bubble, Willie was diagnosed with cancer. He did not want to start chemotherapy. Jaylen thought about skipping the restart entirely. Instead he made him a deal. "I'm going to go down there and play, but you got to play, too." "He liked the sound of that, and he signed up." Jaylen went to Florida. Willie started treatment. In October of that year Jaylen sat down on television and talked about him. "He's like a superhero," he said. "He's had a heart attack, cancer, COVID, all at the same time and has beat it all." By the following January, Willie was 79 and still running his grandson's workouts. "He's definitely the best trainer I've had, in terms of pushing me," Jaylen said. "No excuses, no limits." "He's never been stagnant, and I got that from him." The man Joe Frazier put on a hotel room floor in Philadelphia has a grandson who plays in Philadelphia now.
