Portland’s homeless “system” is such an absolute disaster!
Sunstone Way ran over 290 shelter beds in Multnomah and Clackamas. They’re done. Shutting the doors for good June 30. Broke as hell, laying people off, beds vanishing into thin air.
Right as they’re folding, Multnomah County drops the bomb: up to $3.6 million in taxpayer money they shouldn’t have spent. $3.4 million+ in undocumented admin payroll (just “trust us” on the salaries).
Another $104k blown on staff parties at Topgolf, bar tabs at Paddy’s, fancy meals, random travel, holiday crap, and outsourced HR nonsense.

This isn’t even new. Back in February, their ex-finance director Kate Fulton filed a whistleblower suit saying the top dogs — including CEO Andy Goebel — were wasting money like it was infinite.
Ignored overbilling from a vendor tied to a buddy, moved into pricier offices for no reason, retreats, perks, the whole grift.
They denied everything, of course. But this new county audit makes it look way less like a conspiracy theory.
County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson called it “shocking.” The new Homeless Services guy Nathaniel VerGow straight-up said “unacceptable.” They sent the demand letter this week. Sunstone has 15 days to reply. Meanwhile the nonprofit that was “helping the unhoused” is imploding from its own greed and incompetence.
This is exactly why people are done with the homelessness industrial complex. We dump billions in, the execs live comfy, and when it all collapses the actual people on the street get screwed harder. Another “troubled” nonprofit. Another audit. Another round of “how could this happen?!” headlines.
How many times are we gonna watch this same movie before we admit the current approach is broken?
