1/3 #Islam #SocialHarmony

2/3 #Quran #Justice #SocialResponsibility

3/3 #Islam #Peace #HumanValues

FIGHTING VERSES, PATIENCE & TRUST: UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AN The Qur’an contains verses addressing armed conflict, but it also repeatedly emphasises patience, faith, justice and trust in Allah. Understanding these teachings requires reading individual verses within their historical context and alongside the Qur’an’s broader message. Selective quotations can distort religious teachings and turn complex theological questions into simplistic narratives that fuel extremism. 1/4

SABR AND TAWAKKUL: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MESSAGE The Qur’an repeatedly encourages believers to exercise Sabr (patience) during hardship and to place their trust in Allah. Qur’an 2:153 calls upon believers to seek help through patience and prayer. Qur’an 3:159 emphasises trust in Allah, while Qur’an 60:8 affirms kindness and justice towards those who do not fight Muslims because of their religion. These teachings are essential to a balanced understanding of Islamic ethics. Faith is not merely about confrontation; it also requires patience, moral discipline, compassion and justice. 3/4

A BALANCED UNDERSTANDING IS THE WAY FORWARD The Qur’an’s teachings on conflict must be understood alongside its emphasis on justice, patience, religious freedom and peaceful coexistence. Islamic scholars, educators and community leaders have a responsibility to challenge selective interpretations, explain the historical context of fighting verses and help young people distinguish authentic religious scholarship from extremist propaganda. The objective is not to deny the existence of verses about warfare, but to understand them responsibly and reject their misuse to justify violence against innocent people. 4/4

From Tafsir to Terrorism: How Extremists Distort the Qur’an How do extremist organisations use religious texts to justify violence? One method is to isolate Qur’anic verses from their historical context and present selective interpretations as universal religious commands. Qur’an 47:4 is an important example in debates about modern jihadist thought. Understanding its complete message is essential to examining how religious texts can be misused to legitimise extremist ideologies. 1/4

Context, Justice and the Ethics of Islam The Qur’an contains principles that must also inform discussions about conflict and relations with non-Muslims. Qur’an 2:190 instructs believers not to transgress. Qur’an 2:256 states that there is no compulsion in religion. Qur’an 60:8 affirms kindness and justice towards those who do not fight Muslims on account of their religion. These teachings cannot simply be ignored when evaluating claims made in the name of jihad. The misuse of religious scripture is not merely an academic issue. Selective quotations and misleading interpretations can become tools for radicalisation, recruitment and the promotion of violence. 3/4

The Responsibility of Islamic Scholarship Countering radicalisation requires more than condemning terrorism. It demands credible scholarship, responsible Qur’anic interpretation, historical understanding and sustained engagement with young people. Islamic scholars, madrasas, universities and community organisations must help the next generation distinguish authentic religious learning from ideological propaganda. The objective is twofold: reject the manipulation of Islam to justify terrorism and ensure that Muslims are not unfairly judged by the actions of extremist organisations. Religious literacy is essential to challenging radicalisation and protecting society from misinformation.

Indian Muslim scholars such as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani offered a different vision. They argued that Muslims and Hindus could share one Indian nation, distinguishing religious community from national identity. Their approach placed composite nationalism and shared citizenship at the centre of India’s political future. 4/5

The article also highlights a significant development: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind eventually accepted the Indian Constitution and electoral politics. This raises an important question for contemporary Muslim political thought: How can religious identity, constitutional democracy and equal citizenship coexist in a pluralistic India?

In a diverse India, constitutional values and religious ethics can contribute to a culture where justice, dignity, equality, responsibility and peaceful coexistence are respected by all. The real conversation is not about making the Quran and Constitution identical, but understanding where their ethical concerns intersect. 5/5
