The U.S. designated helium as a critical material on Friday. On Sunday, 60 Minutes reported on the helium shortage caused by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian strikes on a Qatar gas facility earlier this year. A range of industries are feeling the impact with no end to the war in sight. Helium is critical for many electronics. One-fifth of the world's helium is consumed by the semiconductor industry, according to the Compressed Gas Association.

Helium makes up 1.84% of the gas that feeds a new plant in Stewart Valley, Saskatchewan, and nearly everything else in that gas is nitrogen. The plant takes in about 340,000 cubic meters of gas a day and sends out about 5,700 cubic meters of helium. Nitrogen comes off more easily than the methane most helium is mixed with. North American Helium made the plant 40% smaller than its Battle Creek plant, and by output it is the largest in Canada. Trucks carry the helium to the US, where it is liquefied. frontiermap.substack.com/p/h…

“If we do not have helium, we'll have to shut down,” says Surya Iyer, president and COO of Polar Semiconductors. The semiconductor industry consumes one-fifth of the world’s helium to make chips used in everything from smartphones to pacemakers. Now, that helium is in short supply. cbsn.ws/4k2lvzM
