During the National Assembly session, Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Mr. Bilal Azhar Kayani informed the House that, on the directions of Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, he had met parliamentary reporters in the Press Gallery following their walkout and listened to their concerns regarding the non-payment of salaries to reporters, press workers and employees of various television channels for several months. The Minister of State said that he had requested details of the channels concerned, the number of affected reporters, press workers and employees, and the total outstanding salary payments. He assured the reporters that their concerns would be taken up and followed through. He also discussed the matter with Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mr. Attaullah Tarar. Mr. Bilal Azhar Kayani further informed the House that the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting had been regularly raising these matters with the Pakistan Broadcasters Association, following which payments relating to salaries and other outstanding matters had been released and certain actions taken in response to complaints. He added that the reporters had also raised concerns about the dismissal of media employees and that he had requested details of these cases. The Minister of State assured the House that the details to be provided by the Parliamentary Reporters Association would be examined and that any gaps or shortcomings identified would be addressed. He also apprised the House of the reporters’ proposal to constitute a joint committee of both Houses of Parliament to examine their grievances in detail, adding that the suggestion would be conveyed to the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting. The reporters also proposed a review of licensing conditions and other regulations governing television channels, along with stronger protections for journalists. The Minister of State requested them to develop these proposals further and informed the House that the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting would brief the House on the matter. Emphasising the importance of parliamentary reporters in covering House proceedings, Mr. Bilal Azhar Kayani appealed to the reporters who had walked out to return to the Press Gallery and resume their coverage of the session. #NASession @BilalAKayani @TararAttaullah
