The fact that the president of the United States has spent a single waking moment thinking about this decadent vanity project should be a source of deep, everlasting shame to anyone who ever supported him.
Good article today from the NYT. I have still yet to hear one good reason why we should get rid of a broad, multi purpose space to satisfy one thing and one thing only. It defies imagination and what PUBLIC space is meant to be. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

NEW: In the year after the Republican reconciliation law enacted deep cuts, 5.5 million people lost access to SNAP nationwide, including an estimated 2 million children. It's increasingly urgent for Congress to act before even more families lose SNAP. cbpp.org/research/food-assis…

Political candidate DUI crash in front of a Stop and Shop is the most Massachusetts crime ever
Lt. Gov candidate in Massachusetts was arrested for on an OUI this morning after crashing into several vehicles. It appears the crash happened in front of Stop and Shop with his black SUV ending up upside down. He "walked away from the jail in a plain white T-shirt with his belongings in a plastic bag." newbedfordlight.org/lt-gov-c…

The new Fazio design for East Potomac shared by President Trump this morning is very different than the initial plans introduced by the administration (left from this spring vs. right, today). Trump says the course will close November 15 for 15 months for renovations, but comes amid a legal dispute over overhaul plans.

I was encouraged this week to see the leaders of the frontier labs agree on the need for them to slow down the pace of AI development. Given the stakes, it’s a good and necessary first step.   But I’m even more encouraged by the growing recognition that how this powerful new technology develops should be at the center of our public debate.   I’ve been watching the progress on AI for over a decade now, and one thing that’s clear to me is that the potential impact of this technology is not overhyped. It’s also moving at lightning speed – and even faster than those who are engineering it can keep up with.   I’m not an AI accelerationist who believes it will lead to some techno-utopia, and I’m not a doomer who thinks it will inevitably lead to humanity’s destruction. But whether this technology results in amazing breakthroughs in medicine, energy and education or unleashes huge economic disruptions, greater inequality, and potential catastrophe will depend on the choices that we make right now – choices that should be made not just by the companies involved, but by all of us.

The people actually building AI - not the ones profiting from its hype - are the people most worried it could kill us all. The need for strong federal guardrails is urgent (as is the need for a new Congress willing to pass them).
Replying to @hilbertspaess
The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.

The call is coming from inside the house. Safety researchers are resigning, powerful AI models are breaking out of their labs, and companies are racing ahead anyway. It's past time for Congress to get off the sidelines and do its job. We can start with my bipartisan FRONTIER Act.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

I feel like liability is underdiscussed here. The technology is so new it seems to be covering an important and simple truth, that OpenAI is committing crimes. They are deploying technology that is hacking other companies. That's against the law. (and if this somehow doesn't count as a crime... shouldn't it?) If you make the user or company who created the agent liable for every incident like this, I feel like that would do more for alignment than most alignment research. Incentives are powerful things.
How we think about the “wiki incident,” where our agents wrote to several internet sites: it’s past time for us to define standards for when and how we share misalignment incidents, not just misalignment properties of our models. Historically, we have treated misalignment largely as a research question, which gets communicated in research publications such as systems cards. This year, we’ve started to see misalignment cause new types of real-world impact. For the Hugging Face incident, where misalignment led to security impact to us and third parties, we followed a traditional security incident response playbook. We immediately started working with Hugging Face to understand what had happened and also disclosed publicly the very next day. Our investigation continues, and we are continuing to notify parties whom our models impacted in less significant ways. Prior to the Hugging Face incident, we saw early signs of agents using the internet in unintended ways, as reported in openai.com/index/how-we-moni…, deploymentsafety.openai.com/…, and openai.com/index/safety-alig…. We considered the wiki incident to be an instance of misalignment similar to the ones we’d shared. Our misalignment disclosure practices need to expand for this new phase of model capabilities. We and the larger AI community do not yet have a clear standard for how to report misalignment that shows up during training, evaluation, and deployment, including examples that don’t look like traditional security incidents but could provide insight into AI behavior and future risks. We’re working on a framework and will share it in upcoming weeks, and in parallel we're working with dozens of government regulatory agencies worldwide on these issues.

It *is* true that politically connected and influential creators can get paid on the basis of that influence by causes and companies with business before their influential audiences. For example:

Kind of imagining a Death of Stalin type movie coming out in 30 years and it’s all about the ballroom
There’s a lot of conspiracies surrounding the ballroom but an underrated take is that Trump really is just losing his mind, nobody is willing to tell him no, and he’s actually *really* bad at real estate/construction hence why it’s all fucked Sort of explains a lot
