It was an honor to speak yesterday with H.E. Jakaya Kikwete @jmkikwete during our workshop with @WHOAFRO. The former President of Tanzania shared invaluable insight on gathering political will for scaling up #PENPlus and strengthening #NCD care across Africa. Asante sana!
Scaling up #PENPlus across Africa and strengthening political ownership of severe NCD care were at the heart of discussions with H.E. Jakaya Kikwete @jmkikwete, former President of Tanzania, on the sidelines of the #PENPlus Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Workshop in Boston. @WHOAFRO and @NCDIPoverty team also explored ways to expand the PEN-Plus initiative to more countries and advance sustainable financing for severe NCD care.

Across Africa, access to care for severe chronic conditions should not depend on a person’s income or proximity to a capital city. On the sidelines of #UNGA81, I addressed the Biannual Meeting of the @NCDIpoverty Network High-Level Advisory Group on the implementation of PEN-Plus and bringing quality care closer to communities through first-level referral hospitals. Ethiopia, Kenya and Zambia are translating political commitment into national plans with targets and budgets. Our task now is to support countries as they expand services and turn these plans into reliable services for people living with severe chronic conditions.

At #UNGA81, I joined the Biannual Meeting of the @NCDIpoverty Network High-Level Advisory Group together with government leaders from #Ethiopia, #Kenya and #Zambia. We discussed how #PENPlus National Operational Plans are changing lives of people living with severe noncommunicable diseases. @WHOAFRO values its collaboration with partners such as @HelmsleyTrust & @NCDIpoverty, which has been instrumental in expanding access to integrated care for conditions such as type 1 diabetes, sickle cell disease and rheumatic heart disease. Together, we remain committed to scaling up #PENPlus so that people affected by severe, chronic conditions in low-resources settings, can access quality care close to home.

PEN-Plus and NCD care are making waves in higher ed. By @kiuvarsity: Dr. Frank Mugabe Rwabinumi, Uganda MOH Principal Medical Officer, said it's important to include teaching institutions in Uganda’s PEN-Plus strategy, which is piloted in two hospitals and poised for scaleup.

@kiuvarsity & @HeartUganda explore collaboration to advance #PENPlus scale-up by integrating PEN-Plus principles into university curricula & in-service training. We're building mid-level providers' capacity to care for RHD & congenital heart disease. news.kiu.ac.ug/kiu-and-ugand…

We help governments and partners implement PEN-Plus to improve access to insulin, hydroxyurea, HbA1c testing, sickle cell diagnostics, and more lifesaving resources for people with NCDs. Better procurement, stronger supply chains, and smarter policies save lives. #ActOnNCDs
