Greetings from the abyss! During the #Okeanos 2026 Cook Islands ROV Exploration cruise, we captured beautiful video of this cusk eel. Interestingly, despite their long bodies and eel-like shape, cusk eels are not "true" eels.

Spotted on satellite: an otter eddy right off Bodega Bay!
While it sounds like a fluffy "sharknado", an otter eddy is actually a type of mesolow (small low pressure center)! Offshore winds interact with complex coastal terrain to create this cyclonic coastal eddy.

This #TimeLapseTuesday, we look back at #Isaias as it evolved from a Tropical Depression to a Tropical Storm, then made landfall in the Southern United States as a Hurricane before becoming a Post-Tropical Cyclone. @NOAA’s #GOESEast (#GOES19) 🛰️ captured imagery of Isaias’ entire journey during October 6–11.

Isaias has already soaked the DC area with 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain, but the storm may have a second act.
After a break in the rain this afternoon, strong thunderstorms and even an isolated tornado are possible this evening, especially south of DC. But storms aren't a sure thing.
Here's what we're watching and when: capitalweather.com/isaiass-s…

Satellite Update 🛰️: The remnants of Isaias are still tracking across the region this morning, bringing 1–2 inches of rain to some spots.
The bright side? Drier air is pushing in from the west, meaning rainfall will start easing up in intensity with some notable breaks ahead.

Antarctica's ozone hole remains unusually large in 2026, reaching around 25 million km² in September.
Scientists say a strong polar vortex has kept the stratosphere exceptionally cold, accelerating ozone depletion. Researchers stress this does not halt long-term ozone recovery, but shows how variable the process remains. Map @NOAASatellites
