A quick test of our new @ExeSciCentre infrared camera to show the benefit of plants for shading buildings - the image on the right shows the brick temp. beneath the leaves (24degC) compared to the exposed brick temp of around 49degC. Free cooling, no electricity required 😍
This is one of my favourite evergreen climbers: clematis 'winter beauty'. It makes sparkly, waxy, bell-like flowers in Dec/Jan/Feb which drip nectar - bees love it & I've seen the birds enjoying it too! It doesn't attach itself to the walls, needs a frame of some sort.
@The_RHS did some fascinating research into the benefits of ivy in cooling buildings (rhs.org.uk/science/articles/…) & @PlymEarth found that green walls (much more substantial than this clematis) can reduce heat loss in winter (plymouth.ac.uk/news/living-w…) - we need more urban greening! 💚
