The word is generally believed to come from the Southern Italian dialect word guappo, particularly Neapolitan, meaning a swaggering, flashy, bold, or braggadocious man. It was later adopted in American English as a derogatory term for Italians. So the popular "without papers/passport" explanation is actually a later backronym, not the real origin.
