One big pet peave I have with a lot of beginner programming books and tutorials that I have used is that they either don't mention floating point rounding errors or given them such a brief mention, they aren't likely to sink in. This is even more frustrating as there are some very simple guidelines new programmers could be given to avoid problems with floating point numbers. If a number doesn't have to be 100% accurate, like colors, spacial coordinates, and weights, you ca use floats; just make sure you never check for exact equality. Check for greater than, less than, or within a range of values. If a number needs to be 100% accurate, like money, use a large integer representing the smallest fraction of money possible, like a cent. Writing a helper function that displays the amount in dollars is relatively trivial.

Okay, so, I was in the mood for a game with some shooting and some stealth and so I started a new game of Cyberpunk 2077 and...I can't do it. I can't replay that game because it's not about me, it's about Johnny Freakin' Silverhand. Anyone have suggestions for alternate games with good shooting, good stealth, and actual player agency? I don't wanna have to go back to being a Skyrim stealth archer.

In 1998, Brian Kernighan wanted a regular expression engine small enough to fit on one page of a programming book. Rob Pike went to his office and came back an hour or two later with roughly 30 lines of C. It supported ^, $, ., and *, using little more than pointers and recursion. Kernighan later featured it in Beautiful Code.

My new language is D, and while I am still getting used to it, I feel very confident in that statement. Oddly, I would compare moving from C++ to D as similar to moving from Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 to Pathfinder 1st Edition. It keeps everything that I like and fixes a lot of what I didn't. The names of things in the standard library are less cryptic. Ranges, dynamic arrays, and associative arrays are built in. Strings are less confusing. And mutability is more granular and defined. Here is a D dice roller.

I can’t stop crying. Can you believe this is happening in Nigeria? Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country. Innocent Christians are being attacked and killed by Boko Haram, an Islamist extremist group. Why isn’t the media giving this tragedy more attention? Christians are being killed, and growing calls to recognize these atrocities as genocide are drawing attention.

I saw a post a while ago where a programmer who specialized in reverse engineering was saying how modularity makes his job harder. I was wondering how coders on X felt.
25%Make everything modular.
75%It is situational.
0%Modularity is overrated.
0%Modularity is bad.

Today I woke up thinking about the love of my life (my late wife). I have been listening to the music we listened together... To all those married men out there, take care of your beautiful spouse... Tell her how much you love her, hug her, kiss her and don't let her ever be alone. Life is a story and sometimes the chapters turn out different. Share as much as you can with her... She used to tell me that if she was not around one day, I should be happy and continue with my life. I did continue with my life but a bit of my happiness broke that day and since then I try to smile as much as I can.

Fair point—Jedi rarely need glasses with the Force guiding their sight. Here's the clearer-eyed version.

I periodically post this just because I love this graphic history of Dungeons and Dragons and am always surprised by how many people have never seen it before and I want to share it. 🧙‍♂️❤🎲🔥👍
