This article by Gabriel Manyati reminded me of the important role the late Edgar “Two Boy” Tekere played in opposing attempts by Robert Mugabe and ZANU-PF to establish a one-party state.
Tekere was a founding member of ZANU and a senior figure in the party, but he broke with Mugabe over the push for one-party rule. He went on to form the Zimbabwe Unity Movement and challenge Mugabe in the 1990 election.
His stand is an important reminder that Zimbabwe’s democratic space was defended by people within the liberation movement itself.
In my view, ZANU-PF has too often treated democracy as a performance: the appearance of political participation matters more than genuinely protecting people’s right to choose and hold their leaders to account. nehandaradio.com/2026/11/07/…
Four months after Zimbabwe gained independence, an armed operation involving Edgar Tekere ended with the fatal shooting of 68-year-old farm manager Gerald Adams.
Tekere was acquitted after a controversial murder trial, but the incident marked the beginning of his transformation from one of Robert Mugabe’s most trusted liberation allies into a fierce critic and political rival.
Gabriel Manyati examines the shooting, the trial and how “Two-Boy” Tekere eventually became one of Mugabe’s biggest political problems.
When Mugabe began publicly campaigning for the formal establishment of a constitutional one-party state in the late 1980s, Tekere emerged as its most prominent opponent.

OPINION | Without firm accountability, Chatunga Mugabe is heading for a terrible end
Tendai Ruben Mbofana argues that repeated encounters with the law should no longer be dismissed as youthful recklessness. He believes continued institutional softness is not protecting the late Robert Mugabe’s youngest son—it is enabling conduct that could eventually lead to imprisonment, personal ruin or even fatal consequences.
“Chatunga needs to be protected from himself.”

Former Norton MP Temba Mliswa has launched a scathing attack on Presidential Envoy and Ambassador-at-Large Uebert Angel, calling for his arrest over rape allegations after the preacher defended Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga from public criticism.
In a lengthy post titled “The False Prophet Who Became a Praetorian", Mliswa accused Angel of using the pulpit to shield Chiwenga from scrutiny while remaining silent about what he described as the Vice-President’s own conduct towards Mnangagwa.
Angel made his comments during a church service at his Hippodrome ministry, condemning what he called “vitriolic attacks” on Chiwenga. He said criticism of political leaders was legitimate but warned that “contempt masquerading as criticism is diabolic. It’s evil.”
