À l’université de Richmond, aux États-Unis, des chercheurs ont entraîné des rats à piloter de petites voitures électriques. Progressivement, ils ont appris à actionner les commandes et à rejoindre une destination pour obtenir une friandise.
L’équipe leur a ensuite proposé un choix entre marcher directement jusqu’à la nourriture ou faire un détour pour prendre la voiture. Sur les trois rats testés, deux ont choisi le trajet au volant.
Pour la neuroscientifique Kelly Lambert, cette observation suggère que conduire pouvait les attirer au-delà de la récompense alimentaire. Un résultat limité à quelques animaux, mais qui donne envie de poser la question : on sous-estime à quel point les rats sont intelligents ?
